John Toshack's resigned as manager of the Wales football team after six years in the job.

He says he's taken the team as far as he can.

Last week, the squad lost 1-nil away to Montenegro in their opening Euro 2012 qualifier. The Wales side haven't made it to the World Cup finals since 1958.

So with a vacancy to fill, we've been finding out what the supporters think.

Gavin Burgess, 28, butcher

"I like Toshack as a manager and a player but he hasn't really got anywhere. Someone to take over with a bit more enthusiasm would be good.

"We haven't been in any major tournaments, only the qualifiers. We're long suffering - we should be in the World Cup playing the big boys.

"Obviously Ryan Giggs would be my dream choice but he's doing well at Manchester United. Maybe he could do it in the future.

"I'd like to see Brian Flynn. He's done well with the Under 21's and maybe someone like Ian Rush, get him on the managerial side of things.

"We need a Welshman in charge, we're not England."

Mark Brown, 25, barman

"John Toshack's spent a lot of time trying to develop youth football.

"He's given the youngsters a big chance with the Welsh football team and it's starting to pay off with the likes of Gareth Bale but the results haven't really come in.

"My top three choices to take over from Toshack would be Mark Hughes firstly. He's got a proven track record, he did a very good job before although he's only been at Fulham a short time.

"Second choice would be Chris Coleman. He did a brilliant job at Fulham and I think he's got the qualities to be a good national team coach.

"Finally, maybe Roberto Martinez, looking at what he did at Swansea, he wouldn't be a bad shout."

Matthew Blower, 21, carpenter

"The current team can't seem to work together and get wins under their belt.

"In six years he hasn't really achieved a lot - there's nothing to show for his time in charge.

"As for someone to take over, I'd like Chris Coleman.

"I don't think Ryan Giggs or John Hartson are ready to take on the Welsh team as they don't have any managerial experience. It doesn't have to be a Welshman in charge, but it would be nice."
