World of Wong Kar Wai (1988-2004)
World of Wong Kar Wai Blu-ray World of Wong Kar Wai Blu-ray A theater here in LA was planning on screening a print of Chungking Express as a midnight movie this spring but had to cancel because the distributor pulled the print. The theater programmer stated it was because the distributor is doing a complete 4K restoration of the film and to look for a new theatrical screening of Chungking Express in SEPTEMBER 2018. This will be followed by a new physical release (whether that is blu ray and/or 4K Ultra HD I can't confirm atm though Criterion was hinted at). So don't pay those crazy prices fot the old Criterion copy of Chungking Express and wait for the new remastered version. I was informed more details will be avilable in August 2018. This will be one of several of Wong Kar-wai's films that are being remastered in 4K. Last edited by Deciazulado; 12-16-2020 at 11:28 AM. |

Why would you do that when a remastered 4K version is coming? If you waited this long, why not wait for the best version?

The Criterion blu has been OOP for a while now. He was saying he bought it before it shot up in value, so its not like he just recently bought it.

I think they mean if you haven't watched it yet, you may as well wait and watch it in 4K and the new restoration rather than watching it on blu.

Same here. I paid MSRP from BN.com after it went OOP and got probably the last remaining copy anywhere online that wasn't jacked up in price. I really should watch it.

The new 4K remaster is old news, but it's nice to have a release date now. This is a top 10 film of all-time for me. Words can't express the impact WKW's body of work has had on my life.

In 28 years 2046 will happen for real, but will we still be here to see it? Maybe the movie will be released via digital download directly to our brains. The West could also use an un-Weinsteined release of The Grandmaster. Maybe a special edition will all of the different cuts. |

This was my first Criterion blu. I had no idea that it was highly sought after and OOP. I love the film, it was the first Wong Kar Wai film and it sent me on a deep dive of his catalog. I think the only film I've never seen is My Blueberry Nights. Happy Together might be my favorite but Chungking, Fallen Angels, In the Mood For Love and 2046 are all so damn good too, it's hard to pick.

I bought this one when it first came out because it was what one of four original Criterion BLU releases. I still have the old open ended top and bottom stylw case that it was released in and also the plastic style case version later issued as a replacement style case. Wouldnt it be clever of Criterion to issue this as one of their first 4K Blus. Just saying i doubt they have plans for 4K yet... but would be a throwback for a new format. |
