The website Impero Romano e Intellettuali Greci presents a selection of texts by Greek authors from the first imperial age on the topic of the Roman Empire. Each of these texts is tagged to identify the most important issues concerning the empire of Rome. These tags provide electronic access to the most significant passages in which some of the most important Greek intellectuals living between the first and second centuries B.C. published and circulated their ideas about the Roman Empire. All of the passages are presented in the original Greek and are accompanied by an abstract in Italian in which the context and content of the passage are summarized. With the presentation of each passage the larger work from which it is cited is indicated, in addition to essential information regarding the dating of and the circumstances under which each work was composed. pp. 373-382

Several simulators have been recently developed in the field of evolutionary genetics which make it possible to test empirical data under hypotheses of genetic variation generated by evolutionary causes. In the perspectives opened in the post-genomic era, they need to meet the growing demand for flexible and computationally efficient algorithms capable of managing genome-wide population datasets. Backward and forward-in-time strategies are available when attempting to better understand the complexity of the evolutionary scenarios actually followed by real populations. However, both strategies have a number of pros and cons. Although non recombinant uni-parentally inherited (NRUP) haplotypes, as the variants of the mitochondrial genome and the majority of Y chromosome polymorphisms, have been an invaluable source of genetic information during the last two decades of molecular anthropological research, few dedicated programs have been designed to model their evolution. The present pap...

The primary objective of the CiBIT digital library is the widest possible diffusion of information on Italian art, literature and history. The aim of CiBIT is to allow scholars and other interested users throughout the world to access and study multimedia documentation (voice and image data are also included) containing all kinds of information on and describing different aspects of Italian culture. The following main areas of artistic and cultural interest are covered: philology, literature, linguistics, medieval and modern history, legal history, musicology. The intention is to make the CiBIT service available to students and scholars in university libraries and research institutes, in the first place, but also in libraries serving the general public. Main aims of the project are to allow users throughout the world (through Internet) to access and consult Italian cultural data, and to provide them with a series of sophisticated tools to process and analyse the textual material in various ways. The CiBIT query system, which is based on that of the DBT system1, has been completely developed in JAVA so that it can be used by all existing WEB browsers and can operate on all kinds of hardware and software platforms. Java applets have been implemented to provide the same level of functionality as the stand-alone DBT system. A multiserver middleware engine automatically selects the best host site depending on the particular requirements of a given query. The CiBIT digital library can be accessed through the consultation of a single text, of a set of texts, or of an entire corpus. Relevant subsets of texts in a corpus can be defined dynamically using the bibliographic data associated with the texts.
