In this article, we intersect the research streams on conducting better literature reviews and on building better theory to present detailed guidelines for developing theory using theoretical concept reviews, literature reviews that present the elements of theory from primary studies. We distinguish three different kinds of theoretical concept reviews: topical for scoping out a theoretical landscape, propositional for arguing a new theoretical model, and confirmatory for testing a theory. We provide specific guidance on how to search for, extract and synthesize the elements of theory using theoretical concept synthesis, as well as other appropriate techniques. We discuss how to develop a theoretical contribution and then present applications of these guidelines for literature reviews of various scales of breadth.

Abstract: The same open source philosophy that has been traditionally applied to software development can be applied to the collaborative creation of non-software information products, such as books, music and video. Such products are generically referred to as open content or free cultural works. Due largely to the success of large projects such as Wikipedia and the Creative Commons, open content has gained increasing attention not only in the popular media, but also in scholarly research. It is important to rigorously investigate the ...

Technology appears to have various intended and unintended consequences for organizations, and this is partly due to different understandings people have about the technology. Over two decades of sensemaking research examines various social and cognitive processes through which people understand organizational phenomena and attach meaning to them. However, the role of the IT artifact in shaping the user understandings and bringing the consequences has been marginally addressed. This study proposes an ecological approach to technology sensemaking that focuses on the relation between user perception of technology and the technological features to which they adapt. Moreover, it advances research and practice by providing the novel conceptual and analytical tools to examine the role of the IT artifact in technological phenomenon. To empirically illustrate the proposed approach and suggested methodology, we report the initial findings of a pilot study on students using Moodle at a North ...

Considering the very broad range of approaches to theorizing, it is challenging to try to encompass them all at once. Indeed, most theory-building guides focus on theorizing within established paradigms, such as positivism or interpretivism. To provide a comprehensive perspective, we develop a unified framework that spans multiple research epistemologies by discussing theory-building from the perspective of inductive, abductive, and deductive theorizing. Based on this framework, we present a simple way of thinking of theoretical contribution as development towards increasing maturity of theory. This theorizing framework is sufficiently general to apply to any social science study that aims to build theory, whether empirical or conceptual. Moreover, the principles of theory building are sufficiently general that they are readily applicable to a wide range of social sciences.

This article has presented a framework for considering business models for information products that focuses on the most important stakeholders: creators of the works, consumers, distributors, and other stakeholders. This framework is needed because of two important limitations of existing business model research with respect to information products: First, most existing research considers business models almost exclusively from the perspective of the distributor (the “firm”) that provides most of the resources to finance the production of the works, to the neglect of the perspectives of the creators and consumers of the works. Accordingly, second, most existing research focuses primarily on profit maximization, to the neglect of other important goals and benefits that stakeholders have beyond money: quality of the works, widespread distribution, and renown or fame to the creators or distributors. In contrast to the traditional research, this framework specifically analyzes all important stakeholders and all their goals in presenting a more holistic view of business models. This perspective is particularly valuable in considering business models for information products and open content, where goals beyond earning revenues are often most crucial.

Although numerous guides exist for building theory, these do not provide much help in carefully gathering material from past research that can serve as material for new theory development. Moreover, although there are numerous guides for conducting literature reviews, none focuses squarely on theory development. We fill this dual shortage by identifying and describing theory-mining reviews, literature reviews that explicitly extract and synthesize the elements of theory from primary studies. Our citation analysis finds that such reviews in information systems have been more highly cited than other kinds of reviews, whether authored by senior or by junior scholars. We present detailed guidelines for conducting a systematic literature review (also known as a systematic review) that develops three different kinds of theory-mining reviews: scoping out a theoretical landscape, contending for a new theoretical model, or rigorously testing a proposed theory. These guidelines are particularly tailored for information systems research, but are sufficiently general to be readily applicable in a wide range of social sciences, so that researchers can stand on the shoulders of foregoing scholarly giants to see farther with new, insightful theories.

The same open source philosophy that has been traditionally applied to software development can be applied to the collaborative creation of non-software information products, such as books, music and video. Such products are generically referred to as open content. Due largely to the success of large projects such as Wikipedia and the Creative Commons, open content has gained increasing attention not only in the popular media, but also in scholarly research. It is important to rigorously investigate the workings of the open source process in these new media of expression. This paper introduces the scope of emerging research on the open content phenomenon, other than open source software. We develop a framework for categorizing copyrightable works as utilitarian, factual, aesthetic or opinioned works. Based on these categories, we consider the applicability of some implications of findings from open source software research for open content. We review some key theory-driven findings ...

This working paper has been thoroughly revised and superseded by two distinct articles, both available at SSRN. The first focuses on developing theory with literature reviews: Okoli, Chitu. The View from Giants’ Shoulders: Developing Theory with Theory-Mining Systematic Literature Reviews. SSRN Working Paper Series, December 8, 2015. This article identifies theory-mining reviews, which are literature reviews that extract and synthesize theoretical concepts from the source primary studies. The article demonstrates by citation analysis that, in information systems research, this kind of literature review is more highly cited than other kinds of literature review. The article provides detailed guidelines to writing a high-quality theory-mining review. The second subsequent article offers various comments on literature reviews from a critical realist perspective: Okoli, Chitu. Critical Realist Considerations for Literature Reviews. SSRN Working Paper Series, December 8, 2015. Using the systematic review framework, it offers various comments from a critical realist lense on uncovering real mechanisms underlying theoretical phenomena. It also offers other general comments on the literature reviewing practice beyond theory-building.

Hundreds of scholarly studies have investigated various aspects of Wikipedia. Although a number of literature reviews have provided overviews of this vast body of research, none has specifically focused on the readers of Wikipedia and issues concerning its readership. In this systematic literature review, we review 99 studies to synthesize current knowledge regarding the readership of Wikipedia and provide an analysis of research methods employed. The scholarly research has found that Wikipedia is popular not only for lighter topics such as entertainment but also for more serious topics such as health and legal information. Scholars, librarians, and students are common users, and Wikipedia provides a unique opportunity for educating students in digital literacy. We conclude with a summary of key findings, implications for researchers, and implications for the Wikipedia community.

First and foremost, I return thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ whose grace has supplied me throughout my doctoral program. Although it has been a difficult and challenging journey, it has been a truly enjoyable one in Him. Every step of the way, he has been my steadfast source; he has revealed himself to me as the Resurrection and the Life; and he has dealt with me thoroughly to work himself into me as the Resurrection and the Life.

Wireless mobile computing promises to usher in the next major paradigm in personal computing. Handheld computers in particular are truly portable and they are becoming increasingly capable of meeting most users’ computing needs. In this paper we outline a vision for deploying wireless mobile computing technology within the realm of professional conferences by creating a Mobile Conference Information System (MCIS). With detailed descriptions of applications and hypothetical usage scenarios, we describe how the system can be used to access conference information, to network people, and enhance common conference services. We also describe several constraints, limitations, and challenges with this concept, and we suggest how these problems can be overcome. In this paper we consolidate many current applications of wireless networked computing into one comprehensive system; we highlight several of the complexities and challenges that apply to any wirelessly mobile information system; and we offer a vision for a valuable platform for future research on the use of mobile technologies. The MCIS will significantly change how conferences are managed and enhance the experiences of the attendees.

Open source software (OSS) communities are an important type of virtual community today, where members convene online with the common goal of producing software that is valuable both to developers and for the general public using the open source development methodology. Participants are mostly male software developers with an average age of 30; most have at least a bachelor's degree. OSS communities have distinctive cultural artifacts, including community norms, values, and beliefs. They exhibit a "gift culture" where "it is more blessed to give than to receive", or to possess. They value quality of work, modesty, sharing, and altruism. As the open source movement continues to grow both as a software development methodology and as a philosophical/social/political approach to intellectual property, OSS communities will have an increasingly important role in the software industry, and it is thus important to understand them.
