Abstract This article introduces the volume on New Actors and Contested Architectures in Global Migration Governance. It presents the aims and scope of the volume, followed by an overview of international cooperation in global migration governance, migration management and advocacy for migrants. We then discuss ‘new’ actors and how they maintain, contest or even alter established architectures and assemblages, followed by a presentation of the articles included in the volume. In conclusion, we reflect on the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic may affect these dynamics.

Many classics of sociology regard ethnic and cultural diversity as an important element of the so-called city ‘urbanity’ or ‘urbanism’. Lefebvre (1991, 1996) describes urbanity as a form of “urban centrality” or a wide spectrum of elements that include numerous personal encounters, contacts, cultural and ethnical heterogeneity, arts and artistic artefacts, unpredictability, playground, exchange of diverse impulses and so on. Similarly, Simmel (1901) states that the city represents an area of more reserved and at first glance insensible individuals but at the same time adds that this condition of individualisation is rather a consequence of extremely rich and diversified impulses that the city dweller must take into consideration. When Wirth (1938) describes the “urban way of life” by three important dimensions i.e. size of population aggregate, density and heterogeneity, he asserts that leaving out just one of those dimensions may provoke the loss of urbanity and consequently lead to a decrease in the quality of life in the city. In this sense, we may assume that various immigrant groups with their social, cultural and ethnic elements represent i.e. constitute an important part of city heterogeneity, which should not be overlooked. Even more, the cities are due to the process of globalisation and global competitiveness forced to reconsider the role of immigration groups in the organization of urban space. Exclusion, isolation or any form of spatial demarcation could in this sense not only result in social stigmatisation of the ‘other’ but also in the diminishment of urbanity and development of city’s creative potentials.

This book is concerned with the role of news media in an increasingly globalized society. It tries to unravel how news as an institution and a genre is both affected by globalization and itself an agent of globalization. A recurrent theme in all of the articles is the impact of globalization on information supply, public debate, and the exercise of democracy. The articles are organized around four themes: Globalization and the role of news media; New media, global news, and democracy; Regionalization and domestication of global news, and War news in global media

What are appropriate and relevant ways for collaboration and coordination between the three sections of aid work, humanitarian, development, and peace? This question has been topical for the aid community for decades when working in places where all three entities are present (Guinote, 2019). It is sometimes rejected, neglected but some times it is also considered and pursued (Hövelmann, 2020). This study aims to assess and analyze the arguments and breeding grounds for the triple nexus approached work in the DRC, the dynamics of promoting and receiving directions in a headquarters-field office relation exploring the challenges and opportunities between the three sections of HDP. Assessments have been done through conducting interviews remotely with people working on-site in the DRC at national or local offices and headquarters in Sweden and Central Europe.
