This third edition of a bestseller is now presented as a three-volume set, making it much more accessible and easier to use when searching for information. Keeping the format that made its predecessors so popular, this edition has been extensively expanded, revised, and updated. It now contains nearly 12,000 entries. Each article provides definitions, formulas, illustrations, web links, bibliographic information, and facts from mathematics, the sciences, and engineering. This new edition is written in an informal style, making it accessible to anyone who has an interest in mathematics. The three-volume set is beautifully bound with much improved typesetting and format.

I really like the historical notes and references in the paper version of this encyclopedia of mathematics. Much of this material is missing from online versions of this and similar encyclopedias. The paper version is great for browsing through mathematical history!

Excellent book - actually. A content listing would make a big difference. Many mathematical works are listed by the name of the "inventor" in this book set. So when looking for a given solution, one has to know the names of all the people involved. That takes time to study for a given problem but makes for a really good read of all the various topics out there.

This 4300 pages book does not have a table of content or index, thus it is hard to use. You have to know the exact mathematical jargon so that you know which page to look for information.

I spotted this book on Amazon US and was thrilled to have the new edition in 3 volumes for easy handling when reading. I also have the previous edition that is even featured on my own book cover  Memory Dump Analysis Anthology, Volume 1 (v. 1)  (the picture of my previous library book arrangement, the book is in the lower right corner). This is a unique volume that sits between  The Princeton Companion to Mathematics  (that I'm also reading now) and  Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mathematics: The Mathematical Society of Japan (2 Vol. Set)  (that I also own). In fact after reading 3 volumes from cover to cover I can start with 2 volumes of EDM. There is also  Encyclopaedia of Mathematics (set) (v. 1-11)  with various additional supplement volumes that I plan to own as well and it looks to me on the same level as EDM.

After searching for the best price I ordered a copy from Amazon DE and after my purchase in just a few days the price was up by 50%! I can only explain this that more people tried to purchase after I used twitter to announce this encyclopedia (there were 5 copies available on Amazon DE and in just 2 days only 1 left) or there was a mistake in price.

3 volumes arrived and I immediately started reading them, a few pages from each volume every day using mod 3 reading technique, for example, Wed - Vol I, Thu - Vol II, Fri - Vol III, Mon - Vol I, an so on. I prefer paper books for bulk reading instead of electronic version (in this case corresponding website) although if I'm interested in a specific article or a keyword I go to Wolfram MathWorld website to get the latest update and citations. These paperback volumes are just for day-to-day scheduled reading to get ideas and general mathematical education. This is why I don't need an Index. For example, just after reading the first pages I got the idea of cubic (qubic) memory representation.

I usually put reviews on Amazon after I finish a book from cover to cover but in this case the review would be waiting for at least a year so I write it now based on my first impressions. After some time I plan to update it.

Thanks,

The issue with this set of book is simply that the website is free, and updated constantly.

And with Wolfram Alpha you get interactive access to the content.

Otherwise if you really need the print version, it is a great resource and structed as an Encyclopedia. Personally I favor Tim Gowers book, because is part Encyclopedia and part Text which covers the fields of mathematics from the top down.

The issue I have with this, which is not an issue with interactive web content, is the endless references back and forth on each topic. Yes traditional encyclopedias do this, but in this case is really is irritating.

4.0 out of 5 stars the text is of great quality but you need to be familiar with all ...
Reviewed in Canada on March 6, 2018
Pros:Extremely broad coverage, contain more information than you find in a math course for alot cheaper,if you are the kind of person that read alot, you won't have any problems with your eyes a contrario of reading these textworks online.
Cons:No division by branch of mathematics(its not a really cons but i personnally think it would be useful),if you're not an accomplished mathematician you could spend alot of time(consider no internet) searching definitions across the 3 books of approximately 1400 pages each.

No matter the cons i don't regret it,the text is of great quality but you need to be familiar with all kinds of math notations.Definitely have a great value.
