Demolition of former Spillers Mill in Newcastle begins

Work has begun to ready a landmark Tyneside building for demolition.

The Spillers Mill on Newcastle's quayside was home to flour production from the 1930s until 2007.

At the height of production 500 people worked at the site, which milled flour used in one in 10 loaves of bread baked in the UK.

A specialist demolition firm has been brought in to level the 120ft (36.5m) high concrete structure, which is expected to take several months.

American owners ADM said there was no future for the building in its present form.

Once the mill is demolished, the prime riverside site, which is owned by the Port of Tyne, is expected to be redeveloped.

Mick Chapman, contracts manager for demolition firm DSL, said the main structure would be tackled once asbestos had been removed.

Mr Chapman said rubble from the site would be crushed and recycled.
