NIMHD is full of dedicated public servants committed to our vision of an America in which all populations have an equal opportunity to live long, healthy, and productive lives. Dr. Gabriel Lai, a Program Director in the Division of Integrative and Biological Behavioral Sciences, is one of them. His work promotes research to understand and address factors contributing to health disparities. In particular, he is interested in evaluating and promoting research on immigrants, and Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations. He shared the following reflection: “My parents and extended family are originally from China and Taiwan. They immigrated to California’s San Francisco Bay Area. As a child, I always cherished large family gatherings during holidays, such as Chinese New Year and Christmas. Now, living in the DC metro area and working at the NIH, I enjoy promoting research on Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations, while supporting my colleagues as a member of NIH’s Federation of AANHPI Network.” #AANHPIHeritageMonth
