Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

About us

About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

Do you care about free, reliable, and open knowledge? Then we need your help ⬇️ Today, we joined forces with 12 Wikimedia affiliates and published an open letter calling on United Nations Member States to include commitments in the forthcoming Global Digital Compact that can allow online public interest projects, such as Wikipedia, to thrive. The Global Digital Compact will be a shared approach to governing digital technologies and will structure the future of digital regulation and cooperation for many countries around the world. Set to be agreed in September, the Global Digital Compact is being developed through a consultation process involving governments, the UN, the private sector, civil society, grassroots organizations, academia, and individuals. By protecting public interest projects and the communities that create them, the international community can ensure that the digital environment advances sustainable development and human rights. If you are committed to preserving free, reliable, and open knowledge, join us and sign the letter: https://lnkd.in/dDku3fuB #ForFreeKnowledge 📷 Tiny Big Picture for the Wikimedia Foundation, CC BY-SA 4.0

Have you ever fallen down a Wikipedia rabbit hole? 🕳️ Navigating from one article to the next by clicking on the blue links while browsing the free encyclopedia is a universal experience. This journey was captured by students of the University of Television and Film Munich, in Germany – Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München (HFF München). They created a 3-minute video that mimics the learning pathway of a Wikipedia rabbit hole. 🐇 “This movie is a thank you to all those with a thirst for knowledge and definitions – for their work in making all kinds of knowledge available for free,” they told us. Dive in to watch their love letter to Wikipedia. 📹 A production of the University of Television and Film Munich. Director, screenplay, editor: Kilian Armando Friedrich. Camera: Louis Dickhaut. We receive several requests for content alterations or removal on Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia and other Wikimedia projects. These legal requests, coming from governments and individuals, range from asking for user data, to demanding copyright takedowns, to deleting user accounts, and more. Twice per year, we publish a Transparency Report, which provides insights into these requests. Check out the latest report, with information from July through December 2023. ⬇️

Prepare yourself for a parade of imagination: the winners of the 2023 Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest are here. 🤩 Wiki Loves Monuments is best known for being the world's largest photo contest. It highlights humanity's cultural heritage through the buildings, structures, and other assets that have gained importance due to their artistic, historic, political, technical, or architectural significance. In 2023, about 200,000 images were uploaded from over 4,700 photographers in 46 countries who participated in the contest. The 15 international winners were found in 12 of those countries, and you can see them all here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dVJJ-Ues 📷 Photographer Mona Hassan Abo-Abda chose to frame the Giza pyramids, the last remaining wonder of the ancient world, through the touching hands of Lorenzo Quinn's sculpture “Together,” part of the art exhibition “Forever is Now”. That vision brought them first place in the 2023 Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest. Mona Hassan Abo-Abda, CC BY-SA 4.0.
