Gov. Snyder supports Flint mayor's recommendation to stay on Detroit water

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said today he's on Flint Mayor Karen Weaver's side in the debate on where the city should get its drinking water.

During a press conference on Tuesday, April 18, Weaver said Flint should stay with the Detroit water system and become a permanent customer of the Great Lakes Water Authority.

Speaking to reporters in West Michigan later that afternoon, Snyder backed Weaver's comments and praised the GLWA.

"It's great for a lot of people," Snyder said. "This is a major step forward in terms of long-term water supply for Flint. But a better answer for the county and the GLWA."

Snyder suggested under such a plan, the city can apply federal resources to "the highest and best use," based on the program.

Snyder was in Grand Rapids touring the Michigan Department of Transportation's annual bridge-building challenge, where high school students from across the state showcase their engineering talents.

"If you look at our (state) infrastructure, we need to invest more," Snyder said. "We need to make sure we're doing that investing while still doing very prudent smart budgeting for the rest of the state."
