“No single book is as relevant to the present moment.”—Claudia Rankine, author of Citizen

“One of the defining books of the decade.”—Elizabeth Hinton, author of
From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime

NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS’ CHOICE • With a new preface • Fascist politics are running rampant in America today—and spreading around the world. A Yale philosopher identifies the ten pillars of fascist politics, and charts their horrifying rise and deep history.

As the child of refugees of World War II Europe and a renowned philosopher and scholar of propaganda, Jason Stanley has a deep understanding of how democratic societies can be vulnerable to fascism: Nations don’t have to be fascist to suffer from fascist politics. In fact, fascism’s roots have been present in the United States for more than a century. Alarmed by the pervasive rise of fascist tactics both at home and around the globe, Stanley focuses here on the structures that unite them, laying out and analyzing the ten pillars of fascist politics—the language and beliefs that separate people into an “us” and a “them.” He knits together reflections on history, philosophy, sociology, and critical race theory with stories from contemporary Hungary, Poland, India, Myanmar, and the United States, among other nations. He makes clear the immense danger of underestimating the cumulative power of these tactics, which include exploiting a mythic version of a nation’s past; propaganda that twists the language of democratic ideals against themselves; anti-intellectualism directed against universities and experts; law and order politics predicated on the assumption that members of minority groups are criminals; and fierce attacks on labor groups and welfare. These mechanisms all build on one another, creating and reinforcing divisions and shaping a society vulnerable to the appeals of authoritarian leadership.

By uncovering disturbing patterns that are as prevalent today as ever, Stanley reveals that the stuff of politics—charged by rhetoric and myth—can quickly become policy and reality. Only by recognizing fascists politics, he argues, may we resist its most harmful effects and return to democratic ideals.

“With unsettling insight and disturbing clarity, How Fascism Works is an essential guidebook to our current national dilemma of democracy vs. authoritarianism.”—William Jelani Cobb, author of The Substance of Hope

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A vital read . . . The book provides a fascinating breakdown of the fascist ideology, nimbly interweaving examples from Germany, Italy and Hungary, from Rwanda and Myanmar to Serbia and, yes, the US. As he proceeds through his framework of the broadest features of his subject, Stanley includes smaller observations that may for some readers land bracingly close to home.”The Guardian

“By placing Trump in transnational and transhistorical perspective, Stanley sees patterns that others miss. . . . Stanley’s comparative perspective is particularly effective in illustrating how fascists use fears of sexual violence. . . . By calling Trump a ‘fascist’—a word that strikes many Americans as alien and extreme—Stanley is trying to spark public alarm. He doesn’t want Americans to respond to Trump’s racist, authoritarian offensives by moving their moral goal posts. The greater danger, he suggests, isn’t hyperbole, it’s normalization.”
The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

“Jason Stanley’s staggering analysis has only grown in importance since the release of
How Fascism Works in 2018. It is one of the defining books of the decade.”—Elizabeth Hinton, author of From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime

“Jason Stanley reveals how the liberties of the people wither when voters embrace politicians who promote the divisive politics of us versus them while denigrating cooperation, compromise, and respect for others.
How Fascism Works builds on philosopher Stanley’s insightful How Propaganda Works to explain in concise and easily understood terms how people get tricked into reversing the expanding rights that made America great.”—David Cay Johnston, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of It’s Even Worse Than You Think and The Making of Donald Trump

“An endless question about history—does it repeat itself? The Allies triumphed over fascism nearly seventy-five years ago. But is it on the rise again? The national populism of Trump and Bannon; Brexit; Orban and the rise of the Hungarian right; the Italian five-star movement; Erdoğan—Jason Stanley has in this extraordinary book tried to answer these questions. For those in denial or in doubt, Stanley’s book provides overwhelming evidence that fascism is alive, well, and on the rise. It’s a clarion call to wake up, pay attention, and do something. No one has any doubt that fascism works; the question remains: How do we stop it? Stanley tells us that fascism is
not a plan on how to govern but a plan on how to seize control. This is an important and essential book.”—Errol Morris, filmmaker and author of The Ashtray

“There are moments in which the fate of humanity itself hangs in the balance, and such times always bring with them the resurrection of ugly myths. And yet, as Jason Stanley, one of this nation’s most important philosophers, makes clear, when such myths are deconstructed and their history is laid bare, we remember the extraordinary ties that in fact bind us together. And in the fire of that powerful recollection, modern-day fascism—the current myth-dependent moment of intolerance, xenophobia, and fearmongering in which we find ourselves—can be rendered to ash.”
—Heather Ann Thompson, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Blood in the Water

“Jason Stanley’s book comes at a most propitious time, when we must come to grips with the political consequences that may follow the rise of xenophobic populism. History teaches what those consequences are, and in his book Stanley, with great analytical and conceptual clarity, not only tells the story but more crucially provides a critical framework through which to see the insidious mechanisms at play that are threatening today’s democracies around the globe. How Fascism Works is a must-read for all of us who take seriously our responsibility as citizens.”
—Jan T. Gross, author of Neighbors

“A sharply argued and timely guide . . . Stanley’s highlighting of the politics of sexual anxiety is particularly welcome and relevant.”
—Ruth Ben-Ghiat, author of Italian Fascism’s Empire Cinema

“With unsettling insight and disturbing clarity,
How Fascism Works is an essential guidebook to our current national dilemma of democracy vs. authoritarianism. The fingerprints of the fascist past are visible in the present, and this volume bravely shines a light upon them.”—William Jelani Cobb, author of The Substance of Hope

I cannot recommend this book enough. I thought I had a pretty good grasp of what fascism is all about and almost gave this book pass. I'm glad I read it. This book gives one the "tools" to detect fascist messaging in our everyday discourse. Normally we can blow past it, but its nice to be able to "flag" discourse as potentially fascist and forestall escalation if necessary. Practical "tools" to do the latter would be helpful - another book perhaps....

Glad I read this book. Provides valuable information and understanding of what is happening in America now and the world we may be living in if we don’t protect our fragile democracy.

I listened to an NPR 1A episode 3 days ago in which the moderator asked, “Is Trump a fascist?” Not one of these distinguished intellectuals was brave enough to agree without a paragraph of mealy mouthed qualifications. I was so disgusted I screamed. I think God heard me. Surfing YouTube in the next hour, still seething, I played a video by Amanpour Co., where their journalist interviewed Prof. Jason Stanley. He was so well spoken and so courageously unequivocal in calling out Trump as a fascist. He is brilliant, articulate and sharply analytical.
I immediately bought his book, How Fascism Works, and started reading. I was not disappointed. It is a masterpiece of concise insightful prose, written by a master of philosophy of language. His immediate family had fled a Nazi Germany and Communist Poland. They instilled in him ideals of courage and expression of truth. He teaches a course at Yale on Propaganda and Political institutions. His previous books have been well received by his academic colleagues. This is his first book for the general public. It is so readable that I could not put it down. He makes so many connections between social identities, institutions, and psychological manipulation through propaganda that anyone who reads this will never be able to see this type of speech again without knowing what it is and what it is trying to accomplish. Once you know—you cannot un-know.
I hope that every thinking person will read this book now before it is too late. He reminds us that democratic institutions designed to protect us are actually real people who are subject to corruption or dismissal. Soon we all may feel the sting of “you’re fired!”

Never thought about fascism before Donald Trump. I can’t understand how Americans could embrace a dictator & give up their Democracy for one obviously crazy man. This book gives a good explanation of the processes to conversion to fascism.

Fascist politics includes many distinct strategies: the mythic past, propaganda, anti-intellectualism, unreality, hierarchy, victimhood, law and order, sexual anxiety, appeals to the heartland, and a dismantling of public welfare and unity. Though a defense of certain elements is legitimate and sometimes warranted, there are times in history when they come together in one party or political movement. These are dangerous moments. In the United States today, Republican politicians employ these strategies with more and more frequency. Their increasing tendency to engage in this politics should give honest conservatives pause.

Stanley breaks down historical tendencies of fascist governments in comparison to the ideals of liberal democracy citing dangerous similarities in modern day politics. Each chapter involves an analysis of specific pillars of fascism that include; propaganda, anti-intellectualism, conspiracy theories, and social hierarchies to name a few. In addition, Stanley provides numerous world examples to thoroughly illustrate the dangers of the present moment as America grapples with "fake news," outlandish conspiracy theories, revisionist history, and identity politics. There are times in history when these elements come together in one party or political movement. These are dangerous moments. In the United States today, Republican politicians employ these strategies with more and more frequency causing a greater threat to American democracy. A relevant, political must have for those seeking a fundamental understanding of fascist tactics, tendencies and philosophy.

Henry Duckworth
5.0 out of 5 stars A How-to Guidebook for Would-be Fascists
Reviewed in Canada on July 2, 2022
Some might see hyperbole or perhaps hysteria in conjuring up the specter of fascism in the current political climate in the west, but this book helped me understand that contemplating democracy without considering fascism is like trying to define a line by a single point; both democracy and fascism lie along a continuum at one end of which the members of a society get to have a say and, at the other end of which, only one man at the top does. All actual democracies lie somewhere in between.

Those observing the political landscape can certainly benefit from an outline such as Stanley offers in this book, which elucidates the mechanisms through which a political system, while remaining nominally a democracy, may nonetheless at times be moved either away from or towards the end at which all the power ends up in the hands of one man. To his credit, Stanley hopes to equip his readers to better identify these movements for what they are.

For those anxious to preserve democracy, he identifies individual aspects that need careful safe-guarding lest they be eliminated one-by-one, like so many pickup-sticks until, imperceptibly, all of the sticks may be gone.

There are some whose reactions to this book are defensive, reading it solely as an attack on conservative politics, but this is not at all how I read Stanley's stance on the subject. Rather, I wonder if it is perhaps those defensive readers themselves who, tellingly, thought they noticed that the shoe fits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read Book
Reviewed in India on September 24, 2022
This book is a must-read if you vouch for a diverse and democratic society. In addition, this book is a good barometer for knowing whether the society you live in is headed towards fascism.

This book lists in detail, how the mythic past is evoked by Fascists ,to set up Us vs Them. The Chapter on Propaganda, as used by Fascists, is frightening. The author has vividly
described why Fascists are unfailingly Anti- Intellectual

The poisonous use of unreality/ fake news/ conspiracy theories is well documented. The use of hierarchy as a tool to further fascism is thought-provoking and an eye opener to those who fall prey to such tactics.

If the chapter on victimhood makes you rage in anger, you are in a fascist
society as a victim. If it makes you feel slimy and angry at the author, you are an agent of fascism perturbed by the fear of exposure. The chapter on Sexual Anxiety has been well illustrated with contemporary examples.

This book needs to be read multiple times. You need to read in detail about some of the incidents related in the book. You need to learn to be wary of leaders who have traits of a fascist. You need to educate common people, friends and family against the machinations of a fascist.
