A forcemain sewer line break aboard Camp Lejeune on Monday led to more than 150,000 gallons of wastewater being spilled.

Officials say the Public Works Division was notified of the break along Brewster Boulevard between Holcomb Boulevard and Stone Street around 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

In order to make repairs, officials say the wastewater lift station near the Wilson Boulevard Bridge had to be shut down. While tanker trucks were used in an effort to prevent an overflow, Camp Lejeune authorities report that peak wastewater flows from households resulted in an overflow.

The Public Works Division Wastewater Team prevented 140,000 gallons of wastewater from reaching the New River, but they say an estimated 182,110 gallons did reach the river.

Officials say the forcemain sewer line was repaired around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, and the lift station resumed operation; lime was applied to affected areas around the station.

In coordination with the North Carolina Department of Water Quality, samples at the spill site have been taken, and officials say results are pending. The incident is being reviewed by the department.
