Catholic University of Angola

The project of a Catholic University in Angola started to take shape within the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST), in the late 90s. The project was given dynamism to the then President of CEAST, Dom Alexandre Cardeal do Nascimento. The use of the experience of the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP), in the person of Mr. Dom António Cardeal Ribeiro, Magno Chancellor of UCP, and in a special way, of Dom José Policarpo (of happy memory), and also of the then Rector of UCP, Prof. Doctor Manuel Isidro de Araújo Alves was instrumental in boosting the first steps of the UCAN project, highlighting here the dynamism and selflessness of Mons. Canon José Alves Cachadinha and support from the Kennedy Foundation.

In order to move forward with the realization of this project, a high-level commission was set up in Lisbon to study the possibility of supporting the organization, structuring and sponsorship of the future Catholic University of Angola. With the opening of the Education System in Angola to a private initiative, the Government of Angola grants to the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tome, (CEAST) the authorization to create the Catholic University of Angola (UCAN) as the only higher education institution of the church Catholic through Decree No. 38-A / 92 of 7 August.

At the end of 1995, His Eminence Dom Alexandre Cardeal do Nascimento appointed a working group to continue the project, this allowed that in October 1997, CEAST formalized the creation of the Catholic University of Angola, through the Decree of 29 October 1997. In this Decree CEAST decided that:

Create the Catholic University of Angola (UCAN), endowed with statutory, scientific, pedagogical, administrative, financial and disciplinary autonomy. UCAN has its headquarters in Luanda, and must create Regional Centers and Institutes whenever required by the development of its mission. Hierachically, UCAN depends on the Holy See through the Congregation for Catholic Education, according to the rules of Canon Law; and depends on the Episcopal Conference, ordinarily through the respective Commission for the University. The aforementioned Episcopal Commission is responsible for maintaining, guiding and supervising UCAN in accordance with its own Regulations. The Great Chancellor is, by inheritance, the Archbishop of Luanda, having the competence to make the nominations proposed by the Episcopal Conference, as well as other functions defined by the Statutes or Regulations. On January 9, 1998, Dom Alexandre Cardeal do Nascimento appoints the Installing Committee, composed of: D. Damião António Franklin (President of the Commission - with happy memory), Mons. Canon José Alves Cachadinha, Fr. Manuel Gonçalves and then, Fr. Filomeno Vieira Dias (now Bishop). UCAN officially started its activities with the Closing Session of the Second Meeting of Delegates of the Episcopal Conferences of the Lusophone Countries, on February 19, 1990. On that occasion, the academic authorities of UCAN were appointed, by decree of His Eminence Dom Alexandre Cardeal do Nascimento, in the following terms: D. Damião Franklin as Magnificent Rector of UCAN, Fr. Filomeno Viera Dias as Vice-Rector, Mons. José Cachadinha as Director of the Library, Documentation and information and Fr.

Teaching activities began on February 22, 1999 at the premises of Colégio São José do Cluny, with the Propaedeutic Courses in Law and Economics, with Dr. António Fernandes da Costa, the first Director of Propaedeutics , Dr. Adérito Correia Decano da Faculty of Law, and Dr. Justino Pinto de Andrade Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management, having started its activities in October of the same year.
