Barb Kirkmeyer - The Conservative Fighter

From my time as Weld County Commissioner to my service in the State Senate, I have worked to make a difference for Colorado conservatives. Now, I would be honored to represent you by taking my conservative agenda for American renewal to Washington, D.C. Here’s a glimpse at my plans and goals:

  • Beat Back Biden, Pelosi, and Schumer:

President Biden’s so-called “Build Back Better” plan is just the visible tip of a much larger iceberg that is saddling America and future generations with trillions of dollars of debt, driving up inflation, and imposing more and more costs on American taxpayers and job creators. When government grows, personal freedom declines. Job one when I get to Congress is to remove Nancy Pelosi as Speaker and beat back the far-left Biden agenda.

  • Lower the Cost of Living:

Inflation results from bad policy in Washington, D.C. – bad monetary policy from the Federal Reserve and bad fiscal policy from Congress and President Biden. Now at levels unseen in decades, inflation is taking a bigger and bigger bite out of every American’s paycheck. The good news? Just as bad policy creates dire consequences, good policy can rein in inflation and foster the creation of good jobs. That starts with ending Washington, D.C.’s spending spree.

  • Reduce the Cost of Government:

I believe the greatest threat to America’s prosperity and leadership in the world is mounting debt. Deficit spending seemingly gets worse with each administration. Regrettably, a day of reckoning awaits our country, and Republicans bear some of this blame. I will work to renew our party’s commitment to fiscal conservatism by ending deficit spending and balancing our budget. I have a record to prove it. Weld County, where I served as commissioner for 20 years, is Colorado’s only large, debt-free county.

  • Promote American Energy Independence:

The Biden Administration’s drilling bans and regulations are simultaneously killing American jobs while subjugating America’s interests to those of countries like Russia, which are stepping in to fill the energy production void. Here in Colorado, the problem is complicated by the efforts of Governor Polis and Colorado Democrats to demonize energy workers and shut down production. I’ve spent my career supporting American energy workers and American energy independence, and I’ll do the same in Congress.

  • Stand Up for America’s Farmers:

Agricultural interests and rural Colorado’s way of life are increasingly under attack in our state and national Capitols. Increasing numbers of politicians ridicule and disparage agriculture interests and the rural lifestyle. As a long-time dairy farmer, I will work to defend the rights and interests of American farmers against attacks on their property rights and onerous regulations that punish farmers.

  • Secure our Borders:

The Biden Administration not only refuses to enforce our borders; it effectively invites illegal immigrants to come to America. His administration provides generous benefits to illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, left-wing run sanctuary cities refuse to work with the federal government to enforce our laws. This must change. A nation that ceases to enforce her borders ceases to be a nation. I will work to fund the wall, secure our borders, and end policies that reward illegal immigration. So-called “sanctuary” cities and states that refuse to work with the federal government to enforce immigration laws should lose federal funding.

  • No More Mandates or Lockdowns:

Let’s be frank. COVID-19 has become an excuse for power-hungry politicians and bureaucrats to exert greater and greater control over Americans’ lives. Here in Colorado, unelected bureaucrats in many counties and cities are imposing restrictions and mandates on citizens that are not based in sound science. This must end. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is taking the right approach. Work to protect those most vulnerable to the virus, make decisions based on sound science, and allow people to make decisions best for themselves and their families. Our freedoms should not exist at the mercy of Anthony Fauci.

  • Get Tough on Criminals:

Lawlessness constrains far too many American cities. While Congress cannot make local governments enforce the rule of law and we should resist the temptation to use the federal government to interfere in local policing, we must set an example and promote a strong criminal justice system. The rhetoric of Congresswoman Andrea Ocasio Cortez and other members of the socialist “squad” is dangerous, fostering growing resentment toward the police and the rule of law and leading far-left states and jurisdictions to pursue policies such as cashless bail. People who break the law should be punished, and our criminal justice system should be blind to politics. That starts, by the way, with punishing those who promoted the false Russian collusion theory against President Trump, if laws were broken.

  • Teach American Greatness:

Too many education institutions are indoctrinating kids to hate America. The latest form of such indoctrination comes in the form of critical race theory, a racist concept that teaches kids to judge people based on the color of one’s skin. Meanwhile, many education institutions punish academics and students with whom they disagree. My remedy is simple: institutions caught teaching critical race theory and/or which punish academics or kids who express conservative or alternative thought should lose their federal funding. Period.

  • Protect the Free Expression of Ideas:

Censorship. Cancel culture. Speech codes. Safe spaces. Shadow banning and deplatforming of conservatives by social media. Had enough? It is time to end subsidies and preferential treatment provided to educational institutions and tech companies that punish and discriminate against conservative thought and speech.

  • Defend the Sanctity of Life:

The far left wants to impose a national right to abortion on demand here in Colorado and across the nation. This callous disregard for the value of life breaks my heart. Not only will I oppose any such policy, I will make the case for protecting society’s most vulnerable, the unborn child. I have been pro-life my entire life.

  • Defend the Second Amendment:

The Second Amendment is a fundamental right guaranteed by our Constitution. As a Weld County Commissioner, I fought to make Weld a sanctuary county from Jared Polis’ so-called “red flag” law. As your Congresswoman, I will defend the Second Amendment at every turn.

  • Proven Leadership

    2021 Emerging Leaders

Washington, DC – Today, GOPAC announced the twenty-four legislators in its 2021 class of Emerging Leaders. Nominated by the legislative leadership in their state, these legislators have demonstrated promise in positively impacting their state and rising within the Republican ranks.

“As Americans are seeking solutions to the issues our communities face, our 2021 class of Emerging Leaders has an excellent opportunity to advance ideas to make the lives of their constituents easier, safer, and better,” said GOPAC Chairman David Avella. “We welcome being part of their development and doing our part to support their success.”

The prestigious GOPAC Emerging Leaders Program is a year-long initiative to educate the next generation of Republican legislators. The Program equips these legislators with information to help legislate more effectively and ultimately achieve leadership roles within their state or run for higher office.

  • Defending Taxpayers

National conservative group lauds 'taxpayer-friendly' Weld County

Weld County’s reputation for going easy on taxpayers has been elevated to formal recognition. The county has picked up an award from the American City County Exchange, praising Weld’s “efforts to alleviate the tax burden on residents as well as progress in eliminating county debt,” according to a press release from the exchange.

Though the exchange’s first-ever Taxpayer Friendly Community Award was handed out last month in Denver at the annual meeting of parent group American Legislative Exchange Council — Weld County Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer formally accepted the honor at a reception July 19 — publicity is evidently just now making the rounds.

Jon Russell, Director of ACCE, noted Weld County’s achievements, lauding “Weld County is the Gold Standard for fiscal responsibility for localities across the country, having saved taxpayers more than $420 million since 2002. With no sales tax and no debt, I can think of no county more worthy of the very first Taxpayer Friendly Community Award than Weld County, CO.”

  • Protecting those who feed our families

Weld Commissioners receive praise from county farm bureau

Weld County Farm Bureau presented each commissioner with a Certificate of Appreciation for their service to the agricultural community.

Citing specifically the commissioners’ work on water issues facing Weld County farmers and ranchers in 2012, Weld County Farm Bureau president Dennis Mundt thanked the board for addressing issues critical to the local agricultural community.

“The Weld County Farm Bureau likes to recognize somebody who has done outstanding service during the past year,” said Mundt.

“All of your efforts have been greatly appreciated by Weld County as well as the Colorado Farm Bureau,” continued Bob Winter, District 1 director for the Colorado Farm Bureau and Weld Farm Bureau member.

  • Preserve and protect the Second Amendment

Weld County becomes latest (and largest) in growing list of Second Amendment sanctuary counties

GREELEY — Weld County Commissioners today passed a resolution declaring Weld a “Second Amendment Sanctuary” county, with Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer saying state lawmakers got the title to the Red Flag bill all wrong.

Senate Bill 19-1177, which proponents say would take guns out of the hands of anyone who is deemed a risk to themselves or others for up to a year, likely drew it’s harshest critics in the five-member Board of Weld County Commissioners and Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams.

  • Honoring our First Responders

During the Fort Lupton Fire Protection District annual awards banquet last Saturday, Weld County Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer was presented with the organization’s prestigious Everett Hogelin Memorial Award. The award, named after the community leader and former member of the Fort Lupton Fire Department, is “presented annually…to the individual most exemplifying the characteristics of humility, dedicated citizenship and sincere concern for his fellow man that were lived by Everett Hogelin.”

Kirkmeyer’s service as chair of the e911 Authority Board for three years, chair of the North I-25 Coalition and the Highway 85 Coalition, president of the Fort Lupton Urban Renewal Authority Board, as well as her support of the families in the oil and gas industry, were all highlighted by Hogelin’s adult children who presented her with the honor. Recognition was also made of Kirkmeyer’s work with the Boys and Girls Club of Weld County and Fort Lupton, her volunteer service with the South Platte Historical Society and her service as vice-chair for the Family Resource Center of South Weld County.

“It is always wonderful to be recognized for your work,” said Kirkmeyer, “but when that recognition comes directly from your own home-town community, it’s extra special. I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award.”

  • The Conservative Choice

Of the 508 laws passed during the 2021 Colorado legislative session, many reflected an anti-biblical, anti-Christian worldview. The legislature often takes a position opposed to Colorado Christian University’s strategic priorities. These include the support of traditional family values, sanctity of life, compassion for the poor, biblical view of human nature, limited government, personal freedom, free markets, natural law, original intent of the Constitution, and Western civilization.

While the Christian, conservative worldview faces challenges in our state, there are brave men and women at the Colorado Legislature who believe that laws reflecting the teachings of the Bible are best to lead our state forward. Each year, these legislators are bestowed with the Faith, Family, and Freedom Award from the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University because of their strong convictions.

2021 Faith, Family, and Freedom Award winners from the Colorado State Senate include John Cooke, Bob Gardner, Dennis Hisey, Chris Holbert, Barbara Kirkmeyer,

Paul Lundeen, Bob Rankin, Ray Scott,

    Jerry Sonnenberg, and Rob Woodward.

We thank the legislators listed above for their

commitment to advancing faith, family, and

    freedom for all Coloradans.
