Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have experienced life in Israel's prisons since 1967, as did many more in previous decades during the course of the ongoing Israeli military occupation. Yet rarely has the story of their experiences in Israeli jails been told by the prisoners themselves. Typically the Western media portrays them as 'terrorists' while well-meaning third-party human rights advocates paint them as hapless victims. They are neither. This book permits the reader to access the reality of Palestinian imprisonment as told by Palestinian prisoners themselves -- stories of appalling suffering and determination to reclaim their freedom.

The stories in this book are not meant to serve as an account of Israeli torture methods. Instead, each story highlights a distinct experience -- each so personal, so profound -- in order to underline the humanity of those who are constantly dehumanized by Israeli hasbara and the mainstream corporate media's biased accounts.. While highlighting Israel's brutality, readers come to grips with the resilience and grit of Palestinians and their ability to rise above Israel's cruelty and be emblems of power for their people.

Palestinian prisoners are an essential element in the collective resistance against Israeli colonialism, apartheid and military occupation. Rather than being viewed as unfortunate victims, their steadfastness exemplifies the ongoing fight of the Palestinian people as a whole. Despite Palestinian factionalism and lack of a unified political movement, Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons serve as one of the remaining platforms for unity. Regardless of affiliation, they are treated by their captors in the same debasing manner, often in total disregard for human rights conventions. These heroes of resistance, as viewed by Palestinians, often transcend factional divides. Despite numerous obstacles, they resist their jailers as a collective, enduring their pain and fostering their will together.

In reality, all Palestinians living under Israeli occupation and siege are also prisoners. The Gaza Strip is often referred to as the “world's largest open-air prison.” It is in this context that this book becomes an essential read.

Review comments on ‘These Chains Will Be Broken”, Ramzy Baroud, Clarity Press, 2020

Dr. Baroud’s prior books have examined many aspects of Palestinian life, within the homeland as refugees and in the extended Diaspora. In this work, he attends to those who have been held in Israeli prisons.

These interviews and life stories capture the essence of what one finds in Palestinian civil society: “They can steal my land, destroy my home, take my liberty, but they cannot steal my humanity”. The steadfastness (sumud) of the people in the civilian population is quite remarkable, given that they have lived for more than 70 years under a series of escalating controls and restrictions by Israel.

However, for those hundreds of thousands of Palestinians (past and present) in Israeli prisons, life is ever so much worse. Deprived of formal charges, due process or representation, thousands are imprisoned and tortured with minimal access to medical care or family visits. If there is a trial, it is in a military (not civilian) court system which has a conviction rate of nearly 100%. If not tried, Administrative Detention can be applied, keeping people imprisoned for decades without a formal charge.

Although this book includes many details of the dreadful circumstances that prisoners experience, that is really not what the book is about. It is about the indomitable spirit of the people of Palestine: they will not be broken. The Israeli mindset is that “These people must learn to behave as defeated people”. But these interviews and life stories show that the people of Palestine will not be broken or degraded, even by the Israeli prison system.

These are stories of people who create nurturing and supportive systems within the prison walls, as well as to their home communities and their nation. May we all achieve such strength of character.

A very informative well-written book which gives valuable insight into the struggles of many in the Palestinian resistance.

One of the most powerful, raw, and bone-jarring books on the Palestinian experience, Dr. Baroud's new book "These chains will be broken" gives a medium to the voices of the experiences of Palestinian prisoners, young and old alike. From a young girl who was assaulted by a radical settler and then framed for a crime she didn't commit, to an exceptionally academically-inclined prisoner, who, while in prison, became a hyperpolyglot and has dreams of translating the Palestinian narrative into Hebrew and other languages, so that it can reach new, and important audiences.
Among those featured in the book, are the voices of Khalida Jarrar, and Dareen Tatour, a human rights activist and poet, respectively.
This book isn't to be missed by anyone who is involved in human rights activism, the Palestinian cause, or is just curious about the subject at hand. In fact, it shouldn't be missed by anyone at all.
10/10, would highly recommend.

I loved this book. It's a whole new take on the Palestinian prisoners' experience, in a model that could be applied to how prisoners' experience can be narrated, especially in politically oppressive regimes, anywhere in the world.
