Mission: Cultivate well-being & relieve suffering through a scientific understanding of the mind.
About us
Our Mission: To cultivate well-being and relieve suffering through a scientific understanding of the mind Our Vision: A kinder, wiser, more compassionate world About the Center for Healthy Minds: Faced with mental and physical health challenges at a global scale, we conduct rigorous scientific research to bring new insights and tools aimed at improving the well-being of people of all backgrounds and ages. Our research, rooted in neuroscience, comes down to one basic question: What constitutes a healthy mind? Under the leadership of renowned neuroscientist Richard J. Davidson, we're examining contemplative practices and qualities of mind we suspect affect well-being, including attention, resilience, equanimity, savoring positive emotions, kindness, compassion, gratitude and empathy. A part of UW–Madison, one of the world’s top research institutions, we benefit from cross-disciplinary collaborations in the arts and humanities, the physical and natural sciences, and the social sciences. The Center recently founded a non-profit, Healthy Minds Innovations, Inc., which takes the discoveries and insights gleaned from Center research and transforms them into tools and services that allow for larger data collection and new ideas for additional research to continually inform the neuroscience of well-being.

Sustain Dane staff Spencer and Maggie and board member Jim were honored to join Holy Wisdom Monastery for their Spring Solar Tilt. At our February Sustainable Breakfast Series, speakers from the Center for Healthy Minds, University of Wisconsin–Madison identified community-based action as a way to heal climate anxiety. The monastery staff who joined us for this event said it helped inspire their Spring Solar Tilt! As the sun moves north, each of their 30 solar panels must be manually hand-cranked by a team of 3 people (like us!) into its flat spring/summer orientation. Holy Wisdom Monastery is on track to become fully net-zero carbon by the end of 2024.

🧠 Just like being physically in shape means regular exercise, supporting one’s emotional well-being begins with a training program - for the mind. Explore the science behind a healthy mind when world-renowned neuroscientist Richard J. Davidson, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, founder and director of the Center for Healthy Minds, University of Wisconsin–Madison, and founder and chief visionary for Healthy Minds Innovations will visit AIAS at Aarhus University this month. Richard J. Davidson will give a talk on ‘Well-being is a Skill’ at AIAS in the ‘Science & the Flavour of Aarhus’ series, organized by Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS) - Aarhus University in collaboration with DANDRITE (Danish Research Institute of Translational Neuroscience). 🗓 Thursday, 25 April at 18:00-20:00 📍 Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS), Høegh-Guldbergs Gade 6B DK-8000 Aarhus C - Buildings 1630-1632. The talk is open to all interested, and includes tastings from the Aarhus-based micro-distillery Njord (also with a non-alcoholic option).
