I heard its because most of the Ethiopian Tigrayan immigrants to Eritrea when latter was under Italy control specifically originated from the Agame district. They went there for a better life but some Eritrean hated them.

This is the reason.

It ain’t. Calling someone Agame is like calling him/her Gondere or Gojame. Yes, there are people who try to make it an insult but the Agame are wearing that word proudly.

Tigray was very poor and so many Tigrayans were itinerant workers. That’s why.

There aren’t any new insults now because Tigray has a healthy manufacturing base and people migrate their now.

Don't know how it came about but I've heard Eritreans use the word very harshly. Why is "Chinaman" considered racist compared to "Chinese"?

My girlfriend is Eritrean from Asmara. She told me that in the pre-Mengistu era, people from Tigray were poorer than Eritreans because Asmara was developed. As a result, villagers from Tigray used to be travel to Eritrea as seasonal migrant workers (maids, labor work, etc.). This lead to the belief in the Asmarino mind that the people from Tigray were inferior and the word used was "Agame" (as in these poor villagers came from this other place that is inferior to Asmara). So yes, it's similar to how "Chinaman" was used way back when in the US since some poor Chinese workers migrated to build the American railroad.

My mother told me that "Adgi" (translated to "Donkey") was used by Asmarinos to label Gondere villagers.

Exactly. My aunt told me about how the Beles (cactus fruit) picking job were done by them. Today the job is done by kids.

Isn't a agame the name of a region/town in tigray? SO how is this an insult?

It’s in reference to how poor and slummish Tigray was back then
