CARABINIERE: 4th Italian FREMM launched
On 29 March 2014, the Italian FREMM Carabiniere, the third in the Anti Submarine Warfare configuration, was launched at the FINCANTIERI shipyard in Riva Trigoso. The ceremony took place in the presence of political, military, religious and civil authorities. All of them recognised the importance of these new FREMM ships for the Italian Navy.
“Another demonstration of excellence and heritage made by people, skills and technologies, which our country should be proud of”, the Italian Minister of Defence, Roberta Pinotti, said during her speech.
The Italian Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Admiral Luigi Binelli Mantelli, and the Italian Navy Chief of Staff, Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi, underlined the need for the Italian Navy to renew and keep the fleet up to date, confirming that from a technological point of view this ship is state of the art, thanks to the strong industrial cooperation between the two Prime Contractors Orizzonte Sistemi Navali and DCNS, whose effectiveness has already been proven in the previous Italian-French Programme “Orizzonte”.

This is the forth ship launched since 2010 and the first three have already been delivered fully integrated to the Italian Navy. The ceremony was also attended by Claudio Burlando, Governor of Liguria, General Leonardo Gallitelli, Carabinieri Chief of Staff, Tim Rowntree, OCCAR Director, Matteo Bisceglia, OCCAR FREMM Programme Manager, other representatives from OCCAR-EA and Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri.
The Godmother of the ship was Ms Liliana D'Acquisto, niece of Sergeant Salvo D'Acquisto, a Carabiniere who sacrificed his life during the Second World War in order to save 22 hostages. For his heroism he was awarded the Gold Medal of Military Valour. The Frigate "Carabiniere" - so named in honour of the Armed Force, which this year celebrates the 200th anniversary of its foundation – has been built as part of the Italian-French FREMM programme, which will replace the Italian Navy Lupo and Maestrale Class.
The Carabiniere will now be transferred by barge from Riva Trigoso shipyard to La Spezia – Muggiano to complete platform preparations and to start the Platform Harbour and Sea Acceptance Test.
