The EU Pollinator Hub is a new milestone in efforts to improve conditions for pollinators and all relevant stakeholders in Europe. It features an online collective approach to sharing harmonised and standardised data on pollinators to monitor their health and target actions to protect them. The EU Pollinator Hub is a unique online platform that integrates and centralises data related to pollinators, bees, beekeeping, and other relevant data for the agricultural sector. In an unveiled recent proposal, Member of the European Parliament Norbert Lins asks to loosen #pesticide use regulation⚠️☠️. This is highly problematic considering the increasing evidence on the harms pesticides cause and the fact that existing regulations already lack enforcement! A Coalition of civil society organisations has published the troubling letter and reacted to the proposal, presenting arguments against following this dangerous path. Pollinators play a crucial role in the preservation of terrestrial ecosystems, yet they are on the verge of extinction as a result of numerous threats that have worsened in recent years, largely due to human action. That is why legal and administrative measures must be adopted to promote and guarantee the protection of pollinators, specifically bees and beekeepers. 🐝In 2018 the European Parliament Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development submitted a motion for a resolution focused on bees to the European Union with the following points: 👉Demand for a 50% increase in funding for beekeeping and more support for European beekeepers. 👉Proposed ban on pesticides harmful to bees and more investment to develop healthier alternatives to current ones. 👉 Demand for an action plan to reduce rampant bee mortality. 👉Perspective of measures to curb the importation of counterfeit honey. At BeeLife, we are specialised in advocacy with EU institutions with the purpose of achieving improved environmental conditions affecting pollinators and beekeepers. 👉 Beekeeping is a labor-intensive activity, so the beekeeping industry is an important employment-generating agent and represents an increase in income for many rural families.  👉Additionally, beekeepers can generate additional income by producing products derived from honey or beeswax such as candles, creams, soaps, vinegar and wine. 👉There are many families who depend on bees for their survival, both beekeepers and farmers, as pollinators are necessary for the creation of crops. Beekeepers, in their quest for improvements, urge governments to: 👉Promote policies and law initiatives for the care of bees and the protection of biodiversity. 👉Design and implement better policies in response to smallholder families' economic and productive challenges (for example through national or regional associations or umbrella ones like BeeLife). 👉Promote environmentally friendly agriculture and beekeeping, leading to a reduction in the use of transgenics and agrochemicals. 👉To highlight the relevance of beekeeping activity for the pollination of other crops and the preservation of biodiversity.
