About us
The Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing data-driven analysis and evidence-based reporting on global conflict and transnational security issues. We use cutting-edge technologies to manage, integrate, and analyze disparate data from diverse languages, regions, and sources, incorporating our own field research from conflict zones and fragile states. We seek to engage with local and international audiences and produce compelling analysis on conflict and security issues. In doing so, we fill a critical gap left by traditional public sector and profit-driven institutions.

This past month, we celebrated the 10-year anniversary of our Environmental Crimes Fusion Cell — C4ADS’ first-ever program. While this team has since split into two distinct and more specific programs, our original ECFC team in many ways paved the way for the broader counter-wildlife trafficking (CWT) movement at large; we were one of the first organizations to present wildlife trafficking as a global security issue rather than a conservation issue. Today, this is commonplace — CWT has become a widely accepted intervention approach, and data-driven network analysis is used by conservation professionals around the world. In the last decade, our Natural Resource Security and Wildlife Crimes programs have worked with global partners to do everything from linking protected fish to Mexican Cartels to building powerful interactive platforms for visualizing wildlife seizure data (and that’s just the tip of the iceberg). Want to learn more about how we help others use data to protect wildlife? Our next monthly newsletter comes out soon and will feature reflections from our Wildlife Crimes Program Director, Faith Hornor. Sign up today to get it delivered straight to your inbox! Subscribe 👇

A secretive Uzbek firm linked to the president's family has earned millions on state contracts and is tied to a network of companies stretching from New York to Dubai to Hong Kong, according to a new investigation by RFE/RL. Assisted by UAE business records obtained and analyzed by C4ADS, these findings shed light on the global reach of cronyism and corruption at the highest levels of the Uzbek government. NEW: Since the #Taliban took over #Afghanistan in 2021, women have faced severe oppression and violence across the country. Now, we've partnered with ZanTimes (in collaboration with the Centre for Information Resilience’s Afghan Witness project) to develop a new platform for visualizing this human rights crisis, turning the organization’s archival data on these arrests, disappearances, and killings into a powerful new interactive map to hold accountable the perpetrators of violence and the system that enables them. NEW: Since 2023, we’ve meticulously mapped the supply chains connecting #XUAR-based mines reliant on #Uyghur forced labor to global networks of finance and trade. Now, we’ve used publicly available financial reporting to extend that analysis, uncovering trends in the end-markets of Chinese gold produced in these mines — essentially determining where these goods are ending up, and how they may ultimately make their way into your daily routine. While the 400+ companies sourcing high-risk gold from XUAR represent nearly all corners of the world and sectors of the economy, our analysis shows a concentration of these materials in the tech industries of France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, and the UK. This follow-up to our 2023 Fractured Veins investigation allows us to be more targeted in our recommendations for governments and private sectors alike, creating more efficient systemic mechanisms for preventing goods produced with forced labor from entering global supply chains. Yesterday, #Canada and the #UK sanctioned several new entities for facilitating conflict in #Sudan. Targeting both #RSF and #SAF operations alike, these sanctions come at a critical and significant moment as Sudan enters a second year of its brutal civil war. C4ADS has identified and investigated several of these newly-sanctioned entities in our past work mapping the illicit financial flows key to the warring parties’ ability to sustain war in Sudan, from our 2022 Breaking the Bank report to our most recent commentary detailing the ways in which recently-sanctioned Sudanese entities have contributed to funding conflict in the nation through a history of systemic corruption, malign foreign influence, and civil repression. We also created a powerful free tool for visualizing the corporate structures of and relationships between Sudanese state-controlled enterprises, which you can explore for yourself at https://lnkd.in/e9MjKqqd. We applaud these new sanctions from Canada and the UK. It will take a coordinated, whole-of-society movement to end the unjust conflict currently driving the Sudanese people out of their country and to starvation, and this is a pivotal step in undermining the financial flows that support the RSF and SAF as they continue to wage war in the nation.

📢 We are pleased to announce the release of a new brief in collaboration with C4ADS. In our brief, we digest the key findings from their ground-breaking Fractured Veins report, published in October 2023. The report, which sheds light into the unavoidable links between gold mined, processed and manufactured in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), Uyghur state-sponsored forced labour, and its ties to end-user Western brands, financial markets, and investment portfolios, highlights the urgency for industry stakeholder action to address the widespread evidence of systemic human rights abuses in the region. 🤝 Together with C4ADS, we are taking stock of the developments of the past six months since the publication of the report, including the responses from both the public and private sector, and offering a set of tailored actionable recommendations to decision-makers in the private sector to identify, assess and take action to address the well-documented use of state-sponsored forced labour in XUAR and eliminate their exposure to it.
