Wales reprieve for Savage

Robbie Savage (left) was axed for "disrepecting" the Italian skipper Paolo Maldini on TV

Leicester's Robbie Savage was recalled to the Wales squad to play Italy at Anfield on Saturday after being axed for "disrespectful behaviour".

Coach Bobby Gould had kicked Savage out of the team following the midfielder's appearance on Sky TV on Friday, when he threw away a shirt belonging to Italian skipper Paolo Maldini.

Savage was told to leave the team hotel by Gould at 08.40 GMT on Saturday morning, leaving Wales with a 17-man squad.

But Gould later had a change of heart and re-instated him on the bench.

A statement, released by the Football Association of Wales had earlier read: "During the interview, Savage was seen to be both disrespectful to his team-mates and highly derogatory to the great Italian defender Paolo Maldini by throwing away his shirt."

Gould said: "Players must realise that they have a duty to put-up on the field of play and shut-up off it, otherwise this game, which is loved by millions, will be in very serious trouble indeed."
