Jock Stein hours before he collapsed and died at Ninian Park in 1985

Cardiff City will officially open their new £38m stadium with a prestigious friendly against Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic on 22 July.

The pre-season match will be poignant as both clubs remember Celtic's legendary boss Jock Stein who died at Cardiff's current Ninian Park home.

Stein suffered a heart attack and died after Scotland's World Cup qualifier against Wales in September 1985.

Celtic chief Peter Lawwell said: "The game will be a fantastic occasion."

Cardiff's new 27,000-capacity stadium, built by Laing O'Rourke, will be handed over to Cardiff City a few weeks ahead of schedule and will also be home to Cardiff Blues rugby region.

Celtic chief exec Lawwel added: "We are pleased to play our part in the opening of such a prestigious new venue."
