Tartan Army wins fair play award
The Tartan Army has been rewarded for its sportsmanship by the Belgian Olympic Committee following Scotland's visit to play Belgium in a World Cup qualifier in September.
The 12,000 fans who travelled to Brussels have been awarded the annual Fair Play Prize by the committee. Despite the disappointment of failing to qualify for the World Cup as a result of the defeat in Brussels, the biggest-ever travelling support remained good humoured. The prize will be presented to representatives of the Scotland Travel Club and the Scottish Football Association in Brussels at the General Assembly of the Belgian Olympic Committee on Friday 7 December. Further praise SFA chief executive David Taylor said he was delighted at the impeccable behaviour of the travelling support in Belgium. "Once again, the value of the Scotland Travel Club has been proven beyond doubt," he added. The award is one of a number of accolades received by the Tartan Army in recent years. Scotland fans were rewarded by Uefa after the 1992 European Championship in Sweden for having the best supporters. A further award followed the 1998 World Cup finals in France. Last year, the behaviour of 5,000 Scotland supporters in Zagreb was praised amongst others by the mayor of the city. The Scotland Travel Club, which now has almost 15,000 members, was established in 1980 with the aim of encouraging responsible behaviour and putting an end to the distress caused by the actions of an irresponsible minority of supporters. |
