	Modern yearbooks list him as Edwards, but Football Encyclopedia 1934, a match report in The Sporting Life, and Charles Alcock himself, call him J Hawley-Edwards. Regardless, his birth certificate, marriage certificate and death certificate all list him as Edwards. Although, the 1891 census did call him Hawley-Edwards. Possibly to double-barrel his surname after he married.

	According to the 1851 census, John Hawley Edwards is the one year old son of John Hawley and Emma Matilda (née Faulkner). He is the youngest of three children living at Belvidere in Shrewsbury. His father is an attorney and solicitor.
	According to the 1861 census, the Edwards family are living at Loseley House in Shrewsbury. He has four younger siblings, but neither John or his mother are on this census return. They have three servants and a governess.
	According to the 1871 census, John H. is a clerk in the solicitors, living alone in a room in 5 Albert Street in Pancras, London. London Electoral Registers state John Hawley Edwards is living at 6 Lloyd Square in Clerkenwell in 1876-77. (His father died early 1877)
	According to the 1881 census, J.H. Edwards, now a solicitor, is visiting the Spencer's in The Grove in Shifnal. Thomas and Emily Spencer's daughter would soon marry J.H.

Death	Friday, 13 January 1893, in Old Colwyn, Conway, Caernarvonshire, Wales. He had been suffering with throat cancer.

"DEATH OF THE MAGISTRATES CLERK― "The Mayor (Mr. G. Evans), taking his seat at the Borough [!!!] Court on Saturday morning, referred to the fact that a telegram had been received that morning informing the Bench of the death of their clerk, Mr. J. Hawley Edwards. The Bench, the Mayor said, deeply felt the loss they had sustained, and desired the deputy clerk to convey to the widow, and family, and expression of their sincere sympathy.―Mr. W. Phillips, another member of the Bench; Mr. F. W. Williams, on behalf of the legal profession; and Mr. H. Blackwell (chief constable), on behalf of the police force, also expressed their regret." - The Birmingham Daily Post, Monday, 16 January 1893 "The death is announced of Mr. Hawley Edwards, the Clerk to the Magistrates for the Borough of Shrewsbury, and the agent for the Conservative member. Mr. Edwards, who has died quite young, from cancer in the throat, was a well-known oarsman and athlete."  - The Cheltenham Chronicle, Saturday 21 January 1893 "A large number of football players in the '70's will learn with regret of the death of Hawley Edwards, who had a unique experience of having played against Scotland for both England and Wales―in 1874 with the former, and in 1876 with the latter. He was a prominent member of the Shropshire Wanderers, and later on captain of Shrewsbury Town when the latter won the Birmingham Cup. Mr. Edwards was Town Clerk of Shrewsbury at the time of his death, and Bowdler, who now plays with Blackburn Rovers, was articled to him.
