John Cabot Trustee Giuseppe Conte Named New Italian Prime Minister

John Cabot University Trustee Giuseppe Conte has been asked by the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella to form the new government of Italy.

A civil lawyer who teaches at the University of Florence, Professor Conte is called upon to head the coalition government composed of the Five Star Movement and the League, the two parties that received the most votes during the March 4 national elections. The next step for Professor Conte is to present his cabinet for approval by President Mattarella, followed by a vote of confidence in both houses of the Italian parliament.

“It is a great pleasure and an honor to announce that Trustee Giuseppe Conte has been asked by the President of the Italian Republic to form the new government of Italy,” said JCU President Franco Pavoncello. “Professor Conte is reserved, respected, accomplished, and extremely capable. I am sure that the JCU community will join me in congratulating him and wishing him all the best in this historic task at a crucial moment in Italy.”

Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees, the Hon. Frank J. Guarini also expressed his delight at the news of Professor Conte’s appointment. “This is an incredible recognition of the respect and confidence that Giuseppe Conte has attained. He has instilled tremendous pride in John Cabot University, and we wish him every success in his new role in forming the next government in Italy,” said Hon. Guarini.
