World Briefing | Africa: Madagascar: 10 Years' Hard Labor For Ex-President

Didier Ratsiraka, the exiled former president, was sentenced in absentia to 10 years of hard labor for embezzling $8 million in public funds before he went into exile in France last year. The court also issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Ratsiraka, a former admiral who ruled the island of 16 million people for more than two decades. His court-appointed lawyer said he did not intend to challenge the verdict or sentence. ''We're not going to appeal because the decision seems fair enough to me,'' he said.
