The President has agreed to take part in a joint transition government with the opposition to prepare for new elections in this strife-torn nation, an announcement said.

President Didier Ratsiraka and the leader of the opposition, Alber Zafy, will effectively share power, the announcement said on Friday.

Mr. Ratsiraka remains President, but Mr. Zafy was named head of the High Authority of the State for the transition to new elections within 18 months. The High Authority replaces Mr. Ratsiraka's Revolutionary Supreme Council.
