Star Control II

Star Control II had a great ending; it was exciting, funny, and tied up the story beautifully. After a long and involved campaign, you discovered the sad fate of the schizoid Mmrnmhrm and their crystalline contemporaries, the Chenjesu. You then facilitated the union of their technologies and their races to give rise to the incredibly advanced Chmmr, who submitted to you the designs for the spectacular Chmmr Avatar fighter.

Equipped with what was arguably the most powerful fighter ship in the entire game, you then launched a final assault on the Sa-Matra, the stronghold of the Ur-Quan and Kohr-Ah. After a fierce combat against Ur-Quan dreadnoughts and Kohr-Ah marauders, you and your squadron of Chmmr Avatars, along with your allies, the Pkunk Avengers and Yehat Terminators, set upon the heavily armored space station, dodging the fortress's powerful defenses and laying waste to each of its power nodes. Once the power nodes were destroyed, you were clear to fly into the station-docking bay and plant the bomb that would destroy it.

After the final battle, you were treated to a lengthy ending sequence, in which the fate of every single one of Star Control II's races was described by a representative of that race. Many of these brief speeches, like that of the lecherous last surviving male of the Shofixti species, were quite funny, and some, like that of the aspiring screenwriter Yehat, were hilarious. The last in the sequence was the Dnyarri, the small, manipulative, and conniving race responsible for the corruption of the Ur-Quan and Kohr-Ah in the first place. Fittingly enough, the last living Dnyarri was trapped on the same space station in which you had planted the bomb, but even in defeat, the Dnyarri had no trouble delivering witty wisecracks up to the end and right on through the credits.

Star Control II's ending really was great. The final battle was an action-packed culmination of the long and involved campaign. The ending sequence was not only highly amusing, it also provided a great deal of closure, since it tied up all of the loose ends for each race.
