Readers' Choice - The Ten Best Gameworlds

TenSpot

Star Control universe
Star Control series

"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players." In Star Control, which garnered three percent of your votes, the players are the extraterrestrial races you meet - and they are what made the gameworld one of your favorites of all time.

"Star Control has a rich universe filled with a wide variety of unusual creatures. You knew when you hailed an unfamiliar ship that your interaction with the race it belonged to would tantalize and entertain. That, combined with the rich history of the tragic Ur-Quan and the Precursors, gave the universe of Star Control a sense of fantasy and wonder as you navigated your ship through its depths." -Adam Bright

"Name another science fiction universe that is populated by such unique (and funny) creatures as the ZoqFotPik (I hope I spelled that right), the two subspecies of Ur-Quan, and all the rest. Star Control 2 was a classic game, and it's made all the better for its great characters and their worlds." -Kevin Rholeder

"It's a no-brainer; every race had a distinct and hilarious personality that not only made the universe worth saving, but also made saving it incredibly fun." -Henry Wong

"Star Control 2 is simply the best game ever written as far as the adventure genre is concerned. You really get the feeling of being the captain of a starship in a strange and alien-filled galaxy, and that your actions and dealings with others can have a significant impact on that galaxy. There is also a large number of unsolved questions and mysterious happenings going on that lead you to dig deeper and deeper to figure out what happened to the mysterious Precursors or the split in the Sentient Milieu." -Michael Horton

"Dozens of planets to explore, many great races who inhabited the galaxy, and the vast emptiness of space between the planet systems... The Star Control world was the closest experience to really exploring the galaxy." -Snir Karny

"The dynamic world of Star Control, which evolved and matured in Star Control 2, remains as one of my most cherished gaming experiences. The various races enjoy a rich blend of character and history that dwarfs the qualities of any similar sci-fi adventure. Add a universe of enormous depth and quality along with the proper dash of humor and epic drama, and Star Control, specifically Star Control 2, is second to none. This space opera remains as the standard for all future cosmic adventures, big and small." -Stephen Good

Instant Poll
"Of the Star Control games, I'd pick only Star Control 2 for this TenSpot. The world that the developers created is populated by aliens with incredibly distinct personalities (both in their ship design and conversation). The weight of history is constantly pressing down on you, either as constant veiled references to past events from the discussions you have with every race (and they all have a different interpretation to put on every event) or the dry, textbook-style histories you can buy from the Melnorme traders. In many cases, you can draw conclusions from the discussions you have with races, and visit the blasted worlds they speak of (even if it isn't essential to the plot). If you sit and do nothing, race after race will be exterminated by the warring Kohr-ah and Kzer-zah, and your actions can influence other races to join one side or the other, or fight amongst themselves. Where else can you find a galaxy where races discuss their previous cultures in detail, the evolution of their spacecraft, their preoccupation with Frungi, or the desires of their dark gods?" -Chris Proctor
