On June 9, 2003, Hartford City Council passed a resolution establishing Mao Sister City International. The City of Mao is located in Province Valverde, Dominican Republic. The oversight body for Mao Sister City International is AIDL, founded December 20, 1979. AIDL has been very active in the development of Mao. AIDL, in collaboration with the Association for Development of the Velverde Province, Obispado Mao-Montecristi, and the Institute for the Development of the Northeast, established the first institute for professional education in Mao - Institute Politecnico del Noroeste.

Today the City of Mao and the City of Hartford are collaborating to develop six computer learning centers, and four additional fire stations. June 8, 2004 the first Mao Sister City delegation will be visiting Hartford.
