Listed and locally listed buildings

Listed and Locally Listed Buildings

Listed buildings

The purpose of listing is to ensure that a building's special architectural or historic interest is fully recognised.  The Council holds a full list of buildings in Cardiff that have been statutory listed by Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments.

There are over 1000 statutory listed buildings in Cardiff.  These range from the gothic revival buildings by William Burges, to humbler terrace houses and even smaller structures such as post boxes.  A note or 'list description' exists for each statutory listed building.

Locally listed buildings

Separate to Cadw listed buildings are locally listed buildings.  The purpose of local listing is to ensure that a building's locally important architectural or historic interest is recognised.  The Council holds a list of buildings in Cardiff that have been locally listed.

Listed building consent

Listed building consent is needed when; demolition, alteration or extension, which affects the character of a statutory listed building, is proposed.

This applies to all parts of the building including objects and structures, interior or exterior, regardless of its grade and whether or not the feature concerned is specifically mentioned in the list description.  It may also apply to associated buildings that are within the curtilage of the principal building and can include boundary walls.

When considering applications for listed building consent the Council is required to have special regard to the desirability of preserving the building or its setting or any features of special architectural or historic interest that a statutory listed building possesses.

If you would like further information about listed buildings or a copy of a list description please contact the Conservation Team.

Remember: It is a criminal offence to carry out such works to a statutory listed building without first acquiring the necessary Listed Building Consent.
