  Brief History

Being named after the famous professor Dimitrie Brandza, the Botanical Garden, in Bucharest is an important center of conservation of different plants, a center of scientific research and education, as well as a center for environment studies.

Founded in 1860 near the faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine, by Doctor Carol Davila, it occupies the territory at the left and right side of the Cotroceni highway. The skilful botanist Ulrich Hoffman has completed the suitable equipment of the garden, so that the first garden in Bucharest reached in short time European standards.

In 1866 the leading role passed to Prof. dr. Dimitrie Grecescu, which will publish the first catalogue of plants, only one ten years after the founding of the public garden.
The catalogue comprised 3.700 species of plants cultivated in open air and hot houses.

In 1874, it will be decided that the territory should become a pleasure-park for the royal family, while the botanical garden will be moved in the center of the city, on the territory of the Vasile Sutu palace, located in front of the University. From this moment on, the leader of the garden will be Professor Dr. Dimitrie Brandza.
The great botanist makes considerable efforts for obtaining a proper territory in order to rearrange the institution, according to his intended mission. His efforts are successful and beginning with 1884 the Botanical Garden starts to develop on its present territory (17,5 ha).
The new hot houses, The Botanical Institute, the Botanical Museum, the Herbaria, were built in turn.
