Genetic Education The Wales Gene Park education initiatives are directed at three groups:
• Health care and other professionals
• Teachers and students
• The public
The aim is to enhance the understanding of Genetics throughout Wales and make access to information easier. Techniquest, the science discovery centre located in Cardiff Bay, is a partner in the delivery of these services. Techniquest occupies a purpose-built centre with 150 interactive exhibits, science theatre and laboratory that has attracted over 1.7 million visitors since moving to its present building in 1995. Techniquest has a well established in-house and outreach Education Programme for primary and secondary pupils and teachers, reaching over 65000 students from Early years to post-16 per year. Techniquest's Teacher Scientist Network links scientists and teachers throughout Wales in Cardiff, Swansea, Bangor, Aberystwyth and Wrexham. It has a strong programme in genetics for secondary schools, which run for eight weeks of the school year. The Wales Gene Park concentrates on Continuing Professional Development for teachers. The events will focus on the social and ethical issues surrounding gene technology as well as research based topics. Continuing professional development is also provided for health care and other professionals. . A range of courses, seminars and workshops on all aspects of genetics have been developed to further the education and training of these professionals and keep them up to date with this rapidly changing field. Courses have been hosted across Wales and feedback has been very positive. Return to top of page

Public Engagement One of the key objectives of the Wales Gene Park is to raise public awareness of genetics and this is being achieved through a range of innovative projects run through Techniquest. Projects have included a Citizens' Jury for young people on the issue of designer babies, an interactive drama called 'Meet the Mighty Gene Machine' and illuminating public lectures on subjects such as DNA and crime detection. Public discussion events on topical genetics issues are also organised. To find out about past events such as the Citizens' Jury click here. To find out about forthcoming events click here.
