9. Jack Petersen
By Sean Davies

Jack Petersen
Petersen was renowned for his ring wars
Petersen was an accomplished heavyweight, but the question will always remain as to whether he could have been world-class at light-heavy, his natural weight.

His father had wanted him to be a doctor, but instead the Cardiff man learned to box in a gym above a pub in the docks.

After enjoying an excellent amateur career, Petersen decided that the big money was available in the heavyweight division.

His talent took him a long way.

He won the British heavyweight title in 1933, made eight successful defences and claimed a Lonsdale Belt.

Petersen tended to get into wars, though, and he soaked up a lot of punishment.

He was never given a world-title shot.
