Petersen was renowned for his ring wars
|
Petersen was an accomplished heavyweight, but the question will always remain as to whether he could have been world-class at light-heavy, his natural weight. His father had wanted him to be a doctor, but instead the Cardiff man learned to box in a gym above a pub in the docks.
After enjoying an excellent amateur career, Petersen decided that the big money was available in the heavyweight division.
His talent took him a long way.
He won the British heavyweight title in 1933, made eight successful defences and claimed a Lonsdale Belt.
Petersen tended to get into wars, though, and he soaked up a lot of punishment.
He was never given a world-title shot.
