Bully Busters Art of Fighting without Fighting

What does the ancient book the “The Art of War” written by Chinese General Sun Tzu, the father of Japanese Karate Gichin Funakoshi, the legendary story of Bokuden the Samurai and the late great King of Kung Fu Bruce Lee, who still is the most popular martial artist in the world have in common? They all said in one way or another that the best way to win a fight is by not fighting. “The Art of War” and over thousand years later Funakoshi in his book “Karate-Do My Way of Life” stated that the best way to win a war was to not fight a battle. Bruce Lee and Bukuden both believed that in the art of fighting without fighting. Interestingly enough that phrase originated in the blockbuster Kung Fu movie “Enter the Dragon” staring Bruce Lee.

When a martial arts champion that was bullying passengers in a ship in route to a martial arts tournament asked Bruce Lee what is your style? Lee answered the Art of Fighting without Fighting. When the bully challenged Lee to a fight, Lee advised him that there wasn’t ample room in the ship. Lee then pointed at a near by island and suggested that they test their skills at the island. Lee told him to get into a small row boat that would take them to the island. As soon as the bully boarded the boat Lee let loose of the rope anchoring the row boat to the ship and the bully was stranded. Lee defeated the bully using mental martial arts.

Even though Bruce Lee helped write the idea into the movie, it was not his original idea. That concept was adopted hundreds of years before. I read this story in my good friend and mentor Dr. Terrence Webster-Doyle’s award winning children’s book “Why is Every Body Always Picking on me.” Let me give you an overview of this legendary story. There is a story of a famous Japanese Samurai swordsman named Bokuden. Bokuden was crossing a lake in a row boat, when an arrogant Samurai boasted that he was the best swordsman. When he noticed that Bokuden was ignoring him, he shook Bokuden and asked him what school he was from. Bokuden responded “mine is the school of no sword.” The bullying samurai angrily told the row man to go to the nearby island so he would fight Bokuden. As they arrived the samurai jumped off the boat and drew his sword. Bokuden took the long oar from the boat man and pushed away from the island. Defeating the bully mentally is the essence of Bully Busters or the Art of Fighting without Fighting.

Webster Doyle has written over 20 books on peaceful conflict resolution and is the creator of the Bully Buster program which I’m currently the only fully certified instructor in South Florida. The Martial Arts for Peace Bully Busters programs teaches children the 12 ways to defeat the bully mentally and non-violently.
