14 Oct Cuban Missile Crisis begins: A U-2 flight over Cuba takes photos of Soviet nuclear weapons being installed. A stand-off then ensues the next day between the United States and the Soviet Union, putting the entire world under threat of a nuclear war.  This does not spoil my 6th birthday celebrations 2 days later.

20 Nov Cuban Missile Crisis ends: In response to the Soviet Union agreeing to remove its missiles from Cuba, US President John F. Kennedy ends the quarantine of the Caribbean nation. 

By 1962 and an escalation in holiday charter business had resulted in passengers exceeding 100,000 and by 1965 control of the airport was transferred from the Ministry of Defense to Glamorgan County Council.

The first midibuses were introduced in 1974 although it was not until 1987 that midibus operation really developed - with the first of the "Clipper" buses. Although the first "driver only" buses operated in May 1923, the general conversion to one person operation commenced in the early seventies and was gradually extended to all our services by 1980 with the Snowden Road service being the last one to lose its conductors. The City Centre bus lanes were first introduced in the mid-seventies and are now even more important as traffic congestion worsens. The very popular Cardiff Multiride Ticket was first introduced in 1974 and has gone from strength to strength ever since, with Multiride facilities now also available for regular travellers on our Caerphilly, Newport, Barry and the rural Vale services.

Adam Osbourne introduced the Osbourne I, the first successful portable computer.

12 Aug IBM released their new computer, re-named the IBM PC. The "PC" stood for "personal computer" making IBM responsible for popularizing the term "PC".4.77 MHz Intel 8088. The PC came equipped with 16 kilobytes of memory, expandable to 256k and one or two 160k floppy disk drives and an optional color monitor. The price tag started at �1,000, which would be nearly �3,000 today.

St David's Shopping Centre was built in 1981.

Cardiff won the South Wales Challenge Cup on 12th March 1881 against Llanelly (as then spelt). The competition was disbanded shortly afterwards due to persistent problems with the crowd. However, in more recent times,
