Apple - Malus domestica
Apple - Malus domestica
© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature There is a huge number of varieties of this small to medium-sized tree. Cultivated for its large, round, edible fruits which ripen from green to red or yellow, the apple is an important food source for wildlife as well as humans. Several species of moth are associated with apple trees. Birds like song thrush and blackbird may nest in them if they are sufficiently bushy and these and other thrushes are very fond of windfalls. Bullfinches are notoriously fond of the buds. Most apple trees have a round, open habit, with oval, aromatic, pointed leaves. The flat, five-petalled open flowers, long associated with weddings and romance, have colours ranging from white to wine.
