Power Cricket
The Power Cricket experiment continues on its merry way as Asia play the Rest of the World, on the weekend of January 25 (sat) and 26 (sun), 2003 at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
Last October, 2002, five players from Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club went to see the first ever Power Cricket match which also took place at the Millennium Stadium; other CSCC members watched it from the comfort of their own home or at the pub.
Power Cricket - The Solution?
So is Power Cricket the solution to attracting larger crowds to the great 'summer' game? The match itself back in October was brilliant and so was the occasion.
Although the crowd was only around 11,000, they tried as hard as possible to fill the other 59,000 empty seats with their cheers.
With players like England Captain Nasser Hussain, Robert Key, Ali Brown, Matthew Fleming, Muttiah Muralitharan, Aravinda de Silva, Courtney Walsh, Wasim Akram, and Nathan Astle, who wouldn't enjoy Power Cricket?
Two games were played, one on a Friday night and one on a Saturday night, each game consists of 4 innings, each 15 overs long. The beauty of it is the fact that Power Cricket is played indoors, under the Millennium Stadium's retractable roof and lights.
The roof and lights means that Power Cricket can be played at whatever time of the year, and in a country such as England, where the weather can play a bigger part in the match than the players, this Power Cricket
idea is excellent.
The thing about Power Cricket is that, when you've grown up watching Test cricket, 4 day cricket and 1 day cricket live at the cricket grounds, with the sun (or rain) coming down, sitting around a 'round' outfield with a big pavilion being the main architectural focus, it's a bit weird when you enter the world of Power Cricket, sitting in a rugby/football stadium, indoors, in the freezing winter.
These factors gel to create an atmosphere which is in fact very different to what a 'normal' cricket fan might expect. However, Power Cricket has been invented not just to bring a new type of enjoyment to the cricket fan, but to attract youngsters to a game which is exciting, challenging, rewarding and which has so much to offer.
If Power Cricket does manage to attract the youngsters of this world, then the future looks to be a promising one.
