Big Screen

Last updated: 22 August 2008

If you're a sports fan, but you don't want to be glued to your armchair watching the Olympics why not visit the big screen in Castle Square, Swansea?

This new facility means you can keep up with BBC coverage of the games in Beijing and the screen will remain in place afterwards.

Enjoy some images of the Olympics opening ceremony as it was seen by people watching the big screen in Swansea.

Athletics, diving, cycling, fencing, boxing, tennis and gymnastics are among the sports people will be able to watch over the coming weeks on the screen as they pass through the city centre on their way to Wind Street or the shops.

It measures four and a half by six and a half metres and stands a whopping four metres off the ground.

Swansea is one of several cities across the UK to have been picked as a giant screen location to celebrate the build-up to the London Olympics in 2012.

The BBC, Swansea Council and the Swansea BID (Business Independent District) are all partners in the project. Funding has come from the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor (OLD) and London 2012 partners Lloyds TSB and BT.

Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Council Leader, said: "Live sport and plans for other broadcasts in the future will help keep shoppers up-to-date when they're out and about and will help generate a great atmosphere in Castle Square."

Operating from 8am to 8pm daily, the screen will initially show BBC coverage of the Beijing Games.

But following the closing ceremony on August 24 the BBC will continue to run the screen, offering local information, news, cultural, sporting, education and community events and content.

Sunday 24 August - 12.30pm

Swansea's World Party Weekend (celebrating 10 years) takes place around the city's Big Screen, Sunday 24 August, as part of the Olympic handover celebrations.

Full coverage of the closing ceremony and the 2012 Party will be provided on the Big Screen. In the square, a vibrant mix of global music and colour dance will be on offer for all the family to enjoy.

The people of Swansea will be raising their own special flag and members of the Morriston Phoenix choir will accompany the audience to 'Delilah' and other crowd pleasers.

Venue: Big Screen, Castle Square, Swansea.

We'll keep you updated on plans for the Swansea Big Screen in the coming months - another has been set up in on the front of St David's Hall, Cardiff.
