10 Anime Series That Need a Reboot

Anime In Need of a Fresh Look

By Briana Lawrence     February 16, 2010

As the spectacular Spiderman once said to Peter Griffin, “Everybody gets one.” This saying has applied to many anime series as of late; Dragonball Z, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Evangelion just to name a few. This got us thinking of other series we would love to see get one more shot, whether it be for better animation and sound, a better following of the manga, or even just to see the series without hundreds of episodes of random filler.

10. Yu Yu Hakusho

We only find ourselves thinking of a series reboot with “Yu Yu Hakusho” when we see FUNimation repackaging it every 6 months. It’s not really desperate for a reboot. It has action. It has humor. And Yusuke Urameshi has to have the fastest death in anime history. But when we see the series in a new shiny box we can’t help but think that a “Yu Yu Hakusho” with better animation and sound would be cool to watch.

9. Hunter x Hunter

When bringing up “Yu Yu Hakusho” one has to bring up the creator’s other popular series, “Hunter x Hunter.” This series needs a reboot because the story -- despite the manga starting back in 1998 -- is still going! This makes us want the anime to restart and include anything we may have missed, which is quite a bit since the last OVA ended on chapter 185 and the manga is still going strong with nearly 300 chapters!

8. Naruto

The series isn’t even close to being complete but we already want to see it redone for one very long, 100+ episode reason. This show desperately needs the “Dragonball Kai” treatment of reducing the fillers. At least “Dragonball Z” wasted time with drawn out battles, Naruto just wastes time with made up villages, cliché new heroes, and predictable villains when the anime starts to catch up to the manga. At least they aren’t ending the series before the manga is over.

7. Inuyasha

After getting a rather disappointing ending the first time around the anime is finally getting the closure it deserves in a 13 episode finale. But why not give it the “Fullmetal Alchemist” treatment and give the whole series a fresh start? If you’re like us you can’t remember the last thing that happened before the finale and you don’t want to re-watch 168 episodes of “Inuyasha” “Kagome” “Inuyasha” Kagome” “Naraku is over there, no over there, no over there” to find out. If the series were redone without all of the repetitive plot points it would probably make it about… ten episodes? Just kidding… maybe.

6. Serial Experiments Lain

We don’t want a restart for any sort of negative reasons, this series is interesting enough on its own. But knowing that this series focuses heavily on the internet we wonder what it would be like if it was redone with today’s technology involved. This series aired in Japan over 10 years ago, what would a 2010 version of Lain be like? Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, I-phones, the possibilities are endless.

5. Yu-Gi-Oh

Back when “Cardcaptor Sakura” first aired in the U.S., a number of episodes were left out. We were surprised to learn that “Yu-Gi-Oh” had the same treatment with an entire season removed. We saw one episode of this missing season and all we could think was this: just how did they managed to edit this into an innocent kid’s show in the first place when their main character’s alter ego likes to play twisted games that can send people to their death? Though the more watered down version is sort of fun to watch in that “this show is really goofy” sort of way, it would be cool to see this series follow the more darker tone the manga can take.

4. Flame of Recca

Much like “Hunter x Hunter” the anime ended smack in the middle of the manga when it was still running. The anime is also fairly short, 42 episodes when the manga is a whopping 33 volumes with over 300 chapters. Needless to say, anime watchers missed out on a lot. Not only that, but the anime also changed some plot points and the physical appearances of some characters. We’re not sure if too many people actually care about this series, but it we enjoyed it enough to want more of it animated. And come on, it’s a series about a boy who claims to be a ninja, and we all know that everyone loves ninjas.

3. Kenshin

We thought that this series was amazing back when we first saw it, hell, we still think that Kenshin’s battle against Saito is one of the greatest anime battles of all time. That’s why this series saddens us. It set the bar high, but when the season with Shishio ended we were given made up stories that didn’t follow the manga at all. We would be satisfied with the series just picking up where it left off -- the way Inuyasha is doing right now -- but why not restart the whole thing? We definitely wouldn’t mind seeing the Kenshin and Saito battle again, especially if they managed to make it look better than it already does.

2. Mobile Suit Gundam

You could throw a dart at any of the older Gundam series and we would jump for joy if they got redone, but we decided to go with the original. A more modern day version with this cast of characters would be cool to watch Amuro was just a normal kid with no burning desire to enter into the war, but he gets thrown into the chaos when his home is attacked. We have a soft spot for the “normal guy,” and this is one of the few Gundam series that doesn’t have some teenager with a horrible past, or some 15-year-old emotionless soldier. Besides, this is the series that started it all, and if iconic series like Evangelion can get so many reboots why can’t Gundam? For goodness sake, they built a giant Gundam in Japan!

1. Sailor Moon

If “Dragonball” was everyone’s shonen anime series while growing up, Sailor Moon was definitely everyone’s shoujo series. High heels, short skirts, and awesome attacks, these ladies were out to save the world “in the name of the moon.“ It was cheesy. It was magical. It had ridiculous daily monsters that put Rita Repulsa’s putties to shame and it had a whiny main character who cried so loud in the first episode that the monsters froze. But damnit, we love this series! And if the most popular shonen series can get a redo, why not the most popular shoujo one? Imagine a Sailor Moon with better video quality, not nearly as many random monsters, and perhaps a proper conclusion with Sailor Stars?

Honorable mentions:
Video Girl Ai: only made into a 6 part OVA when there’s 15 volumes to the manga.
D.N.Angel: because the anime strayed away from the original manga, which is fair, since the manga went on a very long hiatus

Very good list. I would at least like to see Sailor Moon released on DVD. I loved Yu-Gi-Oh but a darker one would have been even better.

It would be hilarious if they enacted a re-do of SAILER MOON but decided to incldue all of the original character designs for the animated series... long dresses, capes, guns, masks, and so forth...

MrJaw, I'm all for a Vampire Hunter D series.  That would be sweet.

10:  Hmmm...

09:  Yes.

08:  No.

07:  No because of Rumiko Takahashi and her anti-young-guy stance.

06:  Hmmm...

05: Yes.

04: Yes.

03: Yes.

02:  Keep Mitsuo Fukuda, Chiaki Morosawa, and all these other pro-moe losers away from this title; and we'll talk.

01:  Needs more of Usagi's brother and MollyXMelvin-shipping.

Stay away from Lain it's as near perfect an anime as i've seen.  all that web 2.0 BS would add absolutely nothing to the story

I have to say, I'm still a little weary of this whole retread-I-mean-reboot phenomenom.  As someone who grew up watching DBZ, I actually am intrigued by the idea of a redone version that cuts out all the fat and gets right to the point, because even in my heyday as a hardcore DBZ fan I thought there was too much filler.  However, that show ended almost 15 years ago and deserves a redo; shows like Naruto and InuYasha are just too new in my opinion to merit a redo (since they squandered away initial goodwill with endless filler).

I would love to see the final manga arc of Kenshin animated.  I don't think they need to redo the opening two seasons, just start with Enishi :-)

I feel like each new  Gundam is in essence a reboot of the franchise to begin with, I don't know why we need to see it remade.  Just because they didn't call the leads Amuro and Char didn't mean we all couldn't tell exactly which series Gundam SEED was patterned after.

Finally, I do agree that more Sailor Moon actually sounds appealing.  Maybe we don't need a new series, just a re-release with a better dub and finally an American release of Sailor Stars.  Although I do recall the creator of the show was unhappy with the way her manga stories were adapted by the end, so perhaps we should do a total reboot.
