ROMULUS, Mich. -

If you're traveling through Detroit Metro Airport this holiday season you may want to take a detour to sample 35 new shops and more than a dozen new eateries.

You could get a makeover on your layover at Estee Lauder's new space. Or get a massage at Be Relax day spa. You could also chill with live music at three different venues.

"We are the face that people see when they come to Detroit," said Tanya Allen, of Hojeij Branded Foods (HBF-APU). "We want to make them feel welcomed and we want them to relax when they're here."

Chick-fil-A's restaurant is in a mini food court. There are local flavors such as Zingerman's. But no one sees more takeoffs and landings than the new Plum Market.

"The fresh foods are nice. The fresh salads and the chicken looked nice," said Chad Brummett, a traveler from Ann Arbor. "It's fresh and healthy."

The airport has seen about $50 million in new investment to boost its food and retail choices. Many of the newcomers have doubled sales over their predecessors. That means more revenue for Detroit Metro Airport.

The new venues have hired 400 new workers and they are seeking an additional 125.

"Culinarians, we have cashiers, waiters, retail, dishwashers and a couple other (positions)," said Wassim Takriti, of Hojeij Branded Foods.
