He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1922, entering the Naval Construction Corps as an Ensign. He did graduate study, 1924-1925, and additional graduate work at Ecole d’Application du Genie Maritime, Paris, France, 1934-1935. As a Captain, he served as Officer at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard 1946-1949, and then at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. In June 1952 he reported as US Navy Shipbuilding Representative, Europe, where he remained until June 1955 when he was assigned as inspector General, Bureau of Ships, at Treasure Island, San Francisco, California. He was the Naval Commander of the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard starting in June, 1956; at that billet, he had been responsible for the preliminary design of twenty classes of warships and received a Legion of Merit for his design work. In addition to the Legion of Merit and the Commendation Ribbon, he was awarded the Victory Medal (World War I); the American Defense Service Medal; the American Campaign Medal; the World War II Victory Medal; and the National Defense Service Medal. He was also awarded the Order of British Empire (Honorary Commander) by the Government of Great Britain, and the Legion d’Honneur (rank of Commandeur) by the Government of France. He was a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

He married Mary Porter Poyer on September 24, 1924 in the District of Columbia.
