Colombian national team: Des McAleenan, former national team goalkeeper coach, died – International Football – Sports

One of the Portuguese collaborators Carlos Queiroz, A former coach of the Colombia National Team, he tragically passed away this Friday in Ireland.

Is about McAleenans, to whom Queiroz joined his coaching staff as a goalkeeper coach. He was found dead at his residence in Dublin. The first reports about his death point to a suicide.

McAleenan arrived in Colombia to replace Eduardo Niño. It should be remembered that in the last two games of Queiroz in command of the team, against Uruguay and Ecuador, he did not do part of the work, having tested positive for covid-19. He was replaced by the Spanish Ricardo López.

Born in Dublin (Ireland), he spent practically his entire career in the United States, where he obtained nationality. He began his career as a goalkeeping coach in 2002 with the New York Red Bulls, having played for teams in the US third division.

After nine years at that club, he went to work at Al Hilal, in Saudi Arabia, and later was in charge of the goalkeepers of the minor categories in the United States, before being called by Queiroz to work in Colombia.

McAleenan told in an interview with the OTB Sports portal that he suffered a very strong depression at the time, after leaving Al-Hilal.

“I got stuck and my wheels started spinning. I just walked into a very dark place; anyone who has suffered from depression will tell you that it is like being trapped in a very, very, very dark maze,” he explained then.

“You cannot see outward and you have no sense of feelings. You lose interest in everything and there is utter despair; intense, numbing pain that just devours you inside,” he added.
