TRIBUTES have been paid to a former SAS soldier who has been described as a 'star' and a fantastic mentor.

Major Rtd. Thomas (Tommy) James Turtle died with his family by his side on December 29, aged 70.

Major Tommy Turtle had received the British Empire Medal for his service in the SAS and R Irish Rangers.

The medal is awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the crown.

One tribute said: " Sorry to hear about Tommy. Knew him well at the camp. My condolences to you and your family at this sad time."

Another tribute added: "I was so so sorry and upset to hear of Tommy's passing. He was a star to me, a fantastic mentor and I was very proud to have served with him. He will never be forgotten."

A tribute left by Malcolm Wood added: "I have always been so proud to have known Tom, and think of him as a friend. He will be sorely missed by everyone who ever knew him."
