The Institute of Coaching is excited to announce our upcoming CoachX Conversation with Amy Edmondson on May 1st, 2024 at 12:00pm EST. Amy will talk with IOC Founder, Carol Kauffman. As a push for innovation intensifies in many industries, the “fail fast, fail often” rhetoric has made failure downright fashionable. Here’s the problem: The sunny rhetoric in books, articles, and podcasts is too often simplistic and superficial. It fails (!) to make the crucial distinctions that separate good failure from bad, making it difficult for best practices to take hold in most organizations. Despite happy talk, most people would rather do anything but fail. Failure is fine in theory, and fine for other people, but difficult to accept for ourselves. Moreover, our efforts to learn from failure skew towards the self-serving and ego-preserving, as the pressure to look successful has never been greater. In organizations without psychological safety, these dynamics are exacerbated. Our session will focus on ideas and practices to help you think about and learn from failure. I describe three types of failure: basic, complex, and intelligent, and use this taxonomy to show how some people and organizations can fail well. Next, I present three awareness zones (self, situation, and system) as vital competencies for navigating uncertainty – and failure – to advance the mission of an individual, team, or organization. Only by embracing our fallibility, along with the fallibility of the organizations we create and work in, can we truly navigate these challenges effectively to thrive in an uncertain world.

Executive Coach - shifting leaders from stressed out to clear-eyed and confident.

"If you don't know what to do about that you probably shouldn't be coaching." That's a grossly arrogant and inaccurate statement made by yours truly a couple months ago while talking with Mike Tamayo, my friend and comrade roughing it with me in the coaching foxhole. Mike was explaining to me that a coach asked a number of other coaches in a social forum that will go unnamed a question along the lines of, "what should I do if my client is depressed?" And my reaction was to scoff and suggest the person might not be qualified to coach if they don't already know what to do about that. But here I am, no expert myself. So I decided to brush up on my DSM-V diagnoses and Psych 101-level knowledge of mental disorders and what to do about them as a coach. I took the Institute of Coaching Mental Health Literacy course - highly recommend BTW - and feel significantly more empowered, ethical, and responsible for steering my clients towards the clinical mental health resources they might benefit from alongside of or in place of coaching. Now I feel a lot less like a jerk and a much more useful coach to prospective and current clients. And I have the bravery of the novice coach - that's right, COACH - who posed that innocent and useful "what to do if..." question to other coaches to thank for it. So thanks brave and naive stranger! You made me better even though I was kind of a jerk!

The Institute of Coaching is excited to announce our upcoming CoachX Conversation with Soren Gordhamer on April 17th at 12:00pm EST. Soren will be talking with IOC Director, Jeff Hull about The Power of Wisdom in the Age of AI. The world is undergoing massive technological changes, and AI will be an integral part of this next chapter of life. While computer intelligence is increasing at lightning speed, there are elements it will never replace, including the power of human connection and presence. Yes, we need answers to certain questions AI will provide, but there are other questions that can only be accessed when we are able to receive support through the presence of another person, someone who is able to foster genuine human connection and empathy. Join IOC Executive Director, Jeffrey Hull for an insightful interview with Soren and preview his upcoming keynote address at the Coaching in Leadership and Healthcare Conference sponsored by Harvard Medical School on May 3-4 2024.
