Want to rank well? You should update your content at least every 1.31 years. We analyzed thousands of popular keywords and found content ranking page one had the following average update frequency. In addition to keywords like "best X software" clearly showing a need for more updates, there was also a clear correlation of update frequency needed against the difficulty of that keyword. If you want to perform for a difficult term under the "best X software" umbrella, the data says you better update at least twice a year. That said, if you had to doing content marketing blindfolded, you wouldn't do terribly if you updated everything every twelve months.
