This is for the NEW (2017) redesigned model of this product
The concept is great, a large-capacity Brita filtered water pitcher for the fridge with a handy spigot so the whole thing doesn’t have to be removed for each use. I’ve always seen the convenience in that idea compared to the Brita filtration pitchers I’ve used for years that take up space in my refrigerator door and have to be refilled after each use.Once I got this dispenser home I began to realize that there are pros and cons to its design, some of which may be difficult to overcome. Here’s a brief outline about what I like and what turned out to be not so great about this dispenser:PROS1. The unit seems to be made about the same as most Brita filtration pitchers, which is to say, it is made well. The plastic is a hard polycarbonate that does not alter the taste of the water, is easy to clean and is relatively safe from cracking and shattering.2. Part of the top is hinged and folds back to refill the dispenser (using another container) so the whole thing doesn’t have to be taken to the sink.3. There is a drainage trough molded in to the bottom of the dispenser (one of the reviewers who didn’t like this product is not accurate about not being able to fully empty the container, the drainage trough permits the dispenser to drain almost fully empty. Look at their photo of the product … it is for an entirely different product that doesn’t even look like the one being sold here, apparently the dispenser has been completely redesigned).4. It uses standard Brita filters which are available almost everywhere.CONS1. The #1 negative is the actual height top-to-bottom of the dispenser is about 10-1/2”. It is impossible for me to arrange my refrigerator to accommodate something that tall. Checking with family and friends most of them said their shelves don’t adjust that far apart either.2. The hole in the spigot is about ¼” from the shelf the dispenser is placed on so there is no way to actually use it without pulling the spigot out over the edge of a shelf each time.3. The idea of the hinged refill lid sounds great until you learn that it takes up about eight more inches above the dispenser (even more to allow room for the container you’re pouring from), so in reality you need almost 20” between the shelves in your refrigerator.4. Removing the entire lid (like to replace the filter cartridge) is awkward. The best way to do it is to open the hinged filler lid to grab the lid for removal. That puts a lot of strain on the hinge.5. There are no real carry handles on the dispenser, which can get heavy when filled with water. There are only two very small plastic handles at either end which are difficult to grab and make the dispenser difficult to carry.I still like Brita pitchers and I actually still like this large dispenser, but with the caution that you will need a space to put it that is almost 20” tall and that you can hang the spigot over the edge of the shelf without it getting in the way (if I were to hang it over the edge of the shelf in my refrigerator it would hit the door shelves which are spaced the same as my interior shelves). I did find a handy alternative location but I would rather have been able to use it at reachable level on my refrigerator’s main shelf.

The water dispenser on my refrigerator finally gave out after 13 years when a small plastic piece inside the mechanism broke off. The repair guy told me it would be $300 to replace this little dime-sized piece. I didn't need any additional persuasion to decide that it was time to get a new Brita water pitcher. I'd used one happily for many years prior to getting a refrigerator with a water dispenser so I knew that I'd be happy with the filtered water.

The new Brita pitcher arrived yesterday. I washed it out and did the required flush to minimize any carbon residue. It fits nicely in my refrigerator (it's just 4.5" wide) with the dispenser nozzle conveniently located for quickly filling a glass with water. It does take a little while to fill it up the first time. After all, the container holds a bit more than a gallon of water. But I was amazed at the speed the water chilled. Living where I do tap water has a slightly off taste. The Brita filter got rid of this taste. Even my cat loves it! :-)

Another great thing about the Brita is that I had some old filters still in their sealed pouches back from when I had my old 10-cup Brita pitcher in 2005. I spoke to a Brita rep who told me that they're still safe to use despite their age. Even though a new filter came with my 18-cup Brita, I used one of my 15-year old filters instead with no problems. Definitely the money spent on this 18-cup Brita was a better more cost-effective solution than spending $300 to have my refrigerator's water dispenser fixed. And the water tastes just as good.

I love it. Now keep in mind as another reviewer said this is a very tall item for a refrigerator. 10.5 inches tall plus there is a lid that hinges open to add water that will require another 4.5 inches making the total space required 15 inches, I luckily have an adjustment in one of my shelves to accommodate that space. You will also need to keep in mind the spigot in the front, my shelf on the door keeps hitting it. A minor issue I just wanted to let you know about. Once you make the required room it's just a matter of adding water. The upper (pre filter) compartment holds 80 oz of water so if you wait till the bottom tank is empty you will need to fill the upper tank 2x with a long wait between them. I don't let it get bellow half way. If you add to much water it just sits there till you drain some then it will filter through. The stock filter is only a 40 gallon filter but there are 120 gallon filters available. With the stock filter there was still a faint hint of tap water taste but it was more than tolerable, and much cheaper and more convenient than bottled water. I just recieved the system 2 weeks ago and with my large family (7people total plus pets) we have already used up the 40 gallon filter I am going to buy the large. 120 gallon filter from Wal-Mart today. Hoping for a better taste. Stock 40 gallon filter is around $6-7 at Wal-Mart and large 120 gallon filter is $16-17 at least those are my prices locally at this time. Setup was easy but the instructions that I got were generic at best but really seemed to be geared for a much different model. Bottom line... If you have the space I would recommended you buy it and I would buy it again if I needed to.

I'm insanely picky about my water. If it has any sort of taste, I won't drink it. I've been buying bottled water for two years and while it's not expensive, I hated the fact that I used so much plastic (I'm not a recycling nut, but 4 bottles of water per day X12 months= 1460. And that's just for a single person).
I ordered this on sale for $25. Despite what other reviewers said, it fits perfectly in my refrigerator; if you have a shelf that you can store a gallon of milk on, then this dispenser will fit on that shelf.
When I assembled everything, it took more force than I expected to fit the filter in it. To keep from breaking the dispenser, I removed the gray portion from the rest of the dispenser and put it on the table, then applied enough force until the filter snapped in. I can understand how other reviewers broke their dispenser by not removing the gray lid portion when installing the filter.

Best news ever? The filter removed the weird taste was in my tap water (it's not fluoride) and it's even better than bottled water! The spigot has never given me any problems; I assumed it would drip right after I stopped using it, but as soon as I flip closed the spigot, not a single drop of water has dripped out after a full month of usage.
I also love the size! At 18 cups, I know I have to drink a full despencer of water every two days. This makes tracking my water intake a lot easier!

I will update if/when I have any issues but from a complete water drinking snob, stop reading the negative reviews and just buy this!

Like everyone else, I looked for the best, and out of hundreds of choices, finally decided on this one. The water flavour is clean and pure. It's extremely easy to use. It came in less than a week. I hate setting up anything, so the simpler, the better. That's why I chose this one, instead of the one with the indicator, which I hear malfunctions after a while, plus I want to wash it without worrying about how to do it. As soon as it came, I took it out of the box, washed it, put in the filter and filled it a couple of times, threw away the water and refilled it. That was the extent of the 'set up'. Can't talk about longetivity, since I just got it a couple of weeks ago. The price seemed very reasonable too. Three people use it in my home and it's big enough for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brita: better than it use to be.

Love this! Its been a while since I've used Brita products, they were expensive and took forever to filter the jug of water. I bought this one thinking I could just fill in stages, but seriously, the tap stream was equal to the filtering process speed. No walking away, no waiting. Also, this jug fits in my fridge so I have cold water all the time. The reservoir at the top can be filled too so you have full water capacity.

The only thing that is a slight drawback is carrying it to the fridge from the sink. It gets kinda heavy and some handles or notches to hold onto on the sides would be worth the space removed in water capacity for them. I'm worried I'll drop the whole thing by the time I get it set back into the fridge.

Overall, I love it and its a nice alternative for those of us who do not have filtered water dispensers from our fridges.

Although I like this product and the amount of cold water I have at any moment it does drip if you aren't careful. I find that it drips most often when you go from the locked open position to the closed position with a flick of the lever. Most likely because it doesn't seal properly when done so quickly. If the spigot is closed slower by bringing the lever back up manually it seals properly. Not that there was anything wrong with the Brita filters but I chose to get alkaloid filters, personally I like the taste better.
