Middlesbrough have appointed former Stoke and West Brom boss Tony Pulis as their manager to succeed Garry Monk.

Welshman Pulis was sacked by the Baggies in November after a run of 10 Premier League games without a victory.

The 59-year-old will watch Boro's Boxing Day home Championship game against Bolton from the stands, with Craig Liddle taking caretaker charge.

Monk left the club on Saturday - just hours after a 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday left them in ninth place.

"I wanted a challenge - a real challenge - and this reminds me so much of Stoke when I went there with Peter Coates," said Pulis.

"I wanted to come at this time because we have so many games in a short space of time, and I can assess everything."

Middlesbrough have not disclosed the length of Pulis' contract.

He has taken charge of 1,043 games in a 25-year managerial career which began at Bournemouth in June 1992.

Middlesbrough will be his ninth club and his first match in charge will be against Aston Villa on 30 December.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson added: "We're excited by this appointment and by what Tony can bring to this football club. There was strong interest from two other clubs, and we're delighted Tony has decided to join us."

    West Brom fan here. He is the most depressing manager I have ever witnessed at my football club. Yes he'll get results, but my god the football is atrocious. Be prepared to never see you score 2 goals or more ever again. He's ruined my club and I can't forgive him.

    Also be prepared for pre match conferences playing down your ability and talking up the opposition. He's so negative it hurts.

    Football, the industry that keeps giving!!!!!...I can't get my head around this one.....Monk gets the elbow because, supposedly, of the style of play, but then employ ultra cautious Pulis to take his place.

    Giving, in that it gives hopeless managers the chance to be more hopeless. I can't see it lasting long...Maybe a punt on say the Cowley Brothers would have been a better choice.

    Another terrible manager setting off on a job to ruin another club. When will English Football realise that there is talent elsewhere in the Football League and not just recycle the same looser's through clubs?

    Monk was doing a half decent job and the appointment has come pretty quick. The natural cynic in me would suggest this was a done deal before Monk got sacked. Boro have the right kind of squad for Pulis. Good defenders and height and pace in strikers. It’ll be dull but probably successful.

    I watched Roy Keane at Ipswich, who had a very similar role. Just because a manager can play defensively and keep a team up in the Premiership, doesn't mean that they can win games in the championship. Lower prem teams try to eek out wins and draws, with solid defensive performances. But, higher champ teams need winning streaks. These are different roles, therefore i dont think Pulis will do well.

    Football is losing all credibility Gibson had already appointed Pullis before Wednesday game so win or lose Monk was going. Young English managers are given no time simple to be replaced by has beens who bring little entertaining football. Owners have never learned from the Ferguson scenario.

    To all Boro fans you have my deeepest sympathy. As of today you will no longer see football at the Riverside .... Hoofball will arrive .. Pulis should be charged with crimes against football ... let alone get another job. And no he won’t get you results .. 2 wins in last 20 games at West Brom .... I have always admired Steve Gibson ... but I guess he has been drinking too much at Xmas ...
