Richard "Rick" O'Meara, D.N.P., retired in 2021 after 39 years of caring for patients at Mayo Clinic. In less than a year, O'Meara came out of retirement and continues to provide supplemental nursing support in various areas throughout Mayo Clinic. When he is not serving patients or traveling to national parks with his wife, he volunteers at the Francis Building information desk at the Saint Marys Campus. In 2020, 60-year-old Gerald (Gerry) Polcari had a sudden gallstone attack that blocked his biliary system. Gerry's kidney and liver began to fail. As his condition worsened, Gerry learned that the only treatment would be a liver transplant. He received his liver transplant in February 2022. Following his transplant, Gerry vowed to give back to Mayo Clinic through volunteer work. Before returning to full-time work, he volunteered on the transplant floor as a nurse aide. He’s also encouraging others to become organ donors. “In January, I welcomed my first grandchild into this world — something that I was not sure I would ever live to see. Michael O'Sullivan, M.D., who led the establishment of Mayo Clinic Laboratories and Mayo Clinic Health System and served as CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, passed away on April 20. Pick's disease is a rare form of dementia in people under 65 causing behavioral and language problems. Mayo Clinic researchers and collaborators have established an international consortium to study the disease, with new findings that link a genetic variant to a greater risk of the disease in some people. Laser interstitial thermal therapy is a treatment for epileptic seizures that uses a laser on the brain. "It's just expanded our surgical options at this point in time where there are very few patients that I see that I can't treat anymore with something that may help them," says Dr. Jamie Van Gompel, a Mayo Clinic neurosurgeon. Inspired by her work and her mother, Stephanie Donelan, a post-liver transplant coordinator at Mayo Clinic in Florida, gave her role as a transplant nurse new meaning by becoming an altruistic living kidney donor. "Working with the transplant team, I've had the opportunity to see the need that there is for organ transplants, " she says. There are nearly 90,000 people on the waiting list for a kidney transplant in the U.S. Unfortunately, the demand for kidneys exceeds the supply. Living donor chains are giving hope to those in need of vital organs. "A living kidney donor chain is when someone altruistically donates a kidney, meaning donates a kidney with not a specific individual in mind, that can start a chain effect of donors," says Dr. Shennen Mao, a Mayo Clinic transplant surgeon.
