Mabel was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of two, following unusual episodes where she would stop what she was doing and become unresponsive. As Mabel grew up and a range of her symptoms continued, her best course of treatment was brain surgery. After successful surgery, led by Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon Mike at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (seen pictured), Mabel returned to school in September and is back singing, bouncing on the trampoline and riding her bike. Mabel’s parents said, ‘She has made a great recovery — one of the first things Mabel said to us was that her head is lighter! We cannot thank the amazing Mike and the nurses enough for their care while Mabel was in hospital. Mike singing Mabel ‘Happy Birthday’ was a particular highlight for her!’ Thank you, Mabel for sharing your story with us — we’re glad you’ve recovered so brilliantly, and well done to the whole team for ensuring Mabel received such excellent care. If you want to become part of a team that make an impact, explore the 350 different rewarding careers that make a difference to patients' lives every day. healthcareers.nhs.uk/ #Epilepsy #BrainSurgery

More children like Aaliyah will now be able to access a new targeted treatment for brain tumours which can be taken at home. ‘I’m able to just take tablets twice a day and go to the hospital every few months, rather than be in hospital to have chemotherapy. I’ve been able to start secondary school with my friends and carry on my hobbies like being a majorette.’ Aaliyah’s brain tumour was found during a routine eye appointment. She was part of a clinical trial at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust of two treatments called dabafenib and trametinib which can stop cancer progressing more than three times longer than chemotherapy. ‘I’m really pleased that other teenagers and children will now be able to have the tablets instead of chemotherapy, it will make a real difference.’ This is just the latest example of our efforts to make more effective treatments available for patients to improve the lives of those facing cancer. https://lnkd.in/efR7-2Mq #NHS #ClinicalTrial

After suffering a heart attack last summer, Paulo, a smoker of 41 years, decided to quit for good after getting advice from his cardiologist at the Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. With support from the Treating Tobacco Dependency team, he has now been smoke-free for eight months! Paulo’s breathing is much easier, he has less difficulty sleeping and generally feels much better in himself. Smokers are more likely to stop for good if they use a combination of stop smoking treatments and receive support from an NHS Stop Smoking Service. GP Anisha went to see her own GP after experiencing tummy pains, changes to her poo and noticing blood on her toilet paper. After further tests, she was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer. ‘Being diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer at the age of 39 was a real shock. I am fit and healthy, and I don’t have a family history of bowel cancer. Thankfully, my tumour was removed completely, and I had three months of chemotherapy to reduce the risk of the cancer returning.’ Anisha is now cancer-free and uses her social media platforms to educate people on the importance of seeing your GP if something doesn’t feel right. Finding cancer early can make it more treatable and can save lives. If something in your body doesn’t feel right, contact your GP practice.
